we have a raid 5 aray that has 3 75 gb scsi drives. the volume has reached its limit of 150 gb. I was thinking of replacing one drive at a time with 150 gb drive and rebuilding the array before replacing second drive, this way i will replace all 3 75 gb drives with 150 gb ones. Anyone tried this? is it possible? i want to have 300 gb user available disk space after i m done with swapping all three 75 gb drives with 150 gb ones.
In theory it should work... Just make sure that you have a good and VERIFIED backup. Also make sure with the RAID array vendor that they support expanding the array since you did not mention the manufacturer...
But 1) until all three are replaced, you'll still only have a 75 GB array and 2) seems kind of a slow and tedious process. Why not just do a backup, replace the entire array and restore from backup?
I'm positive this is safe, but I don't know if you're going to get 300 Gb of space. This may depend on your array controller. It may allow you to replace the smaller drives, but unless your run the array controller's set up utility, you may still have only 150 Gb of space. If that's the case, your only option may be to make a backup, replace the drives, run the array controller's set up utility, and put the data back.
