Don't you think someone else would have insisited the US shoot it down at the expense of their own military/taxpayers? that is of course if it hadn't been left so long as to be flying into the local chippy without forewarning.

I guess it COULD, have landed anywhere, however that would still be America's responsiibility and America's cost for cleanup, rebuilding or whatever else.

When you lob a lawn dart in the air, even if it doesn't come down on your own head, it's still your problem when it lands in the neighbours yard and takes out one of their kids.
