I remember sneakily installing the SCO Xenix 386 Games disk (1 floppy disk, \dev\fd0135ds15 anyone?) when the boss wasn't looking. There were a raft of brilliant games there... my particular favourite timewaster was the cybernetic battletank "Ogre".... Kids today just wouldn't understand! :o)
i was always such a fan of those old school games. i've never played ogre though. i wonder if it is still possible to install it?
Will Crowther's 'Adventure' is one of the all-time classic text adventure games.
I remember playing it on a dumb terminal connected (at 300 baud) via an acoustic coupler to the VAX machine at the Wright Paterson AFB in Dayton. It was 1980.
And, of course, it was all on thermal paper.
I still have the roll.
There are a bunch of versions and ports including a DOS executable at http://www.rickadams.org/adventure/e_downloads.html
Hours of fun in about 100k.

Having run one of the popular AberMuds for several years (Longhorn Mud for those that might remember) I consumed many hours playing other muds and running mine. But let us not forget Haunt, Adventure, Zork and all the others.
I want to say the name of it was The Golden Wombat, but the version I keep finding is the text version. The one I had was like a cross between The Golden Wombat and NetHack.
I really wish I could remember the name of that damn game.

I like ADOM myself.... (adom.de) My 8 year old niece begs me to play it whenever I come over. No one else even knows it's a game.
My current ASCII addiction is Dwarf Fortress, hard to learn, but addictive once you find http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Page
Of course I'll need the new ATI card for it:http://www.bbspot.com/News/2003/02/ati_ascii.html

Ah, yeah... nethack. Boy, did I spend a lot of time playing that. Another passtime-while-waiting-for-your-program-to-finish was robots.
Those were the days...
Those were the days...
Oddly, a timeless addictively entertaining, always changing standard that I judge all games by.
