you aren't talking about the layman's appreciation of AI then, ie conscious.
I watched tv demo of something a bunch of scientists said exhibited intelligence.
They put a wee robot in a circle of card and it whizzed around and mapped out the limits of it's domain, to the point where after a certain number of moves it never bumped into the cardboard.
Then as the piece de resistance they took the cardboard away and stayed with in the same boundary. Some might not define that as intelligent.
Now of course you could improve the program and have it check to see if the limits were still in force. But you thought of that it didn't. Therefore it's artificially stupid, out performed by an amoeba.
