Image maps were once the cutting edge of the World Wide Web, but other technologies have moved them to the background.
Where was the last time a client asked for an image map? Do you encourage image maps as a navigation technique or do you think there other better methods? Like what?

From a usability standpoint, image maps are very overused. They certainly have their place, and where appropriate, they are useful and can't be beat.

is in accessibility.
They are not the easiest bit of tech for even something as simple as a screen reader, or magnifier to handle right.

Yup, that's quite true. A good guideline is that anything with an image map should also have an alternate method of input as well, such as a drop down selection, radio buttons, etc.

I like this, and managed to simplify it a bit more: can lose outer div and list-style:none. Only snag: text-indent:-1000em means selection borders (keyboard navigation etc.) extend to LHS (loooks broken, well it is). font-size:0 should work instead but IE6 shows 1px high text and Opera shows 7px text - shame on both of them (we all know what zero means, don't we?!)
A nice and exceptional use of CSS, but I doubt if it can be used to create more complex shaped hotspots than similar rectangular ones.
Outstanding, much better that using a standard image map. Since every image creates a hit back to the server, the less images on a page the better. Excellent example of CSS, will use this as a class example....
