My first assignment to Germany was to Bremerhaven, on the North Sea coast; the AF flew me into Hamburg. At that time, Hamburg had no jetways, so we walked down the stairs onto a bus that took us to the terminal. I walked into the terminal and came face-to-face with a semi-circle of about 8 German border guards, each one with an Uzi at "port arms." They didn't give me a second glance, but the third man behind me got ALL their attention. I seriously doubt those Uzis were empty.
