I always think a little friendly rivalry helps. set smaller targets than you would normally that gives you the opportunity for more frequent praise and keeps your finger on the pulse. also Maybe sweeten the tasks by giving a job to someone with a little experience and grouping them up with someone with a lot, one gains by giving the other by recieving - a bit corny sounding but it often works and they can both learn someting.
