Could you post directions or a link to where we can get information on downloading/installing Vista/XP Virtual Desktop Manager?

Thanks.
I've seen multiple desktops before, as stated, in Linux distros and other places.
I simply can't work out how virtual desktops are better than using the taskbar to switch between programs? What is the point? How does it make using any OS better? Unless you have multiple displays, which in any case is a matter of dragging windows to different displays, or using screen allocation tools like nView to allocate programs to different displays. Feel free to convince me of the benefits!

multiple "jobs"

If you wear several hats - eg owner of one man business, secretary of a not for profit, and you're a regular individual and you've only got one computer then you probably want to keep the three hat separate. Real VDM's which aren't just fancy task switchers can help you do this - and its a lot better than having multiple User Accounts and using FUS.

The important issue is that data is kept separated, not programs

But whether thiks thing does that I dunno, about to find out, because I want such a thing

I have dual monitors and still use multiple desktops. It was even more important when I had a single display but I still

The first desktop shows all the applications I use to for routine user support. E-mail, MS' AD Users and Computers management tool, our help desk application, MS Notes or other utility for brief notes on things to do or done, and an Excel file where I track hardware inventory. I can see a viewer's e-mail request or help desk request and the applications needed to respond all at the same time without ALT-TABing.

The second desktop has Firefox (open to TR most of the time), Windows Explorer, and a remote connection to our primary file server.

The third is used for any applications in use for a particular project. This may include another browser window, Word, Excel, other remote connection sessions, command prompts, etc. as needed.

By using multiple desktops I can see everything related to an activity at one time instead of constantly switching between apps or trying to arrange windows so I can see related data. It's a tool I have no use for at home but it's the first thing I install when I get a new work machine. I've tried about a dozen or so virtual desktop tools. If you're bored silly see my brief reviews at this desktop discussion from early July:

A legitimate question if you are working on one single project. I need 4 Virtual Desktops (accessible over 4 monitors) to be able to sort Icons, eg. "Computer Maintenance", "WP, Macros and Current Jobs", "Virus and Malware Programs", "Security". Fences is just fine, but there is no way to classify the icons for more convenience. The result is a screen with "icon litter" - certainly better than no Fences, but not optimal.

For those of us who seek an alternative to a cluttered task bar of limited expandability, multiple desktops makes an excellent classification system for icons, types of icons, work in progress, etc.

Fences (software program) in turn provides some very nice subsets (Fences with content and labels) within each desktop. Making the two, multiple desktop programs and Fences, has been my conundrum for the day. After contacting developers of various Virtual Desktop Programs, what I have found is that Crystal Desktop and Fences play well together.

Finally, a way to classify with Sets (Desktops), subsets (Fences) and if need be sub-subsets (Fences within Fences).

I've tried several virtual desktops for XP. I don't remember them all. But at least you have the Microsft's virtual desktop shipped with "tweakuiXP" that integrates and works fine, and the "VirtuaWin" from SourceForge.net. I even found a portable version of the latest, that can be launched from a USB memory stick without prior installation.
