Anyone who has been supervised by a leader who has lost his or her "mojo" knows what a chore that can be for the subordinates. Good leaders spare their employees the pain by self assessing and either making changes in their lives or by moving on. This helps everyone in the long run and keeps your career fresh and fulfilling. Wish bad leaders would do the same - No?

"When he was good, he was very good. When he was bad he brought us all down".

Much like a parenting situation "constancy" is the key to good leadership. True we all have human foibles such as health, personal relationships, etc. But reality is, we need to understand our "work families" as well or better than our home families.

For the last few years, we have had to endure the ups and downs of one such leader. His moments of insight were truly inspiring. However, more often than not, his self centered leadership style produced a spectacular morale busting wake of resentment, sick days and mediocre performance. It become an extreme effort for the senior managers just to keep our staff engaged and productive.

He's been moved out and now we have a new leader with a much different style. It's not just refreshing but also immediate differences can be seen in staff attitude.

Our former leader did not know how to be constant nor able to see the line in the sand for his leadership. He should have moved on sooner - he and we would have been much better for it.

when we look one another level in the eye and lean for mutual support.

Well a lot of those war-games also model the middle tier leaders morale/loyalty to the faction...

If game designers can factor that in, one would hope upper management look after middle management in such a way that the inspiration trickles down. Self assessment is fine, but generally involves removing a beam from ones eye, while a peer or manager could more easily point out the issues.

I think part of being a good leader is showing the troops how to take criticism and do something positive with it and act on it.
