In Word 2003 this does not work.
You don't reference the version of Word you are using in the article. I guess since this is non-functional in 2003 that it is a 2008 feature?

Check your settings

In Word 2003, go to Tools\AutoCorrect Options and select the Smart Tag tab. The settings you may be looking for are there. One of your settings for Smart Tags may be turned off.

I love the OP. If MS actually had intelligent programming behind their products, we would not have to waste our time with this kind of dialogue. yeah, I know, we should know better, do online research ('cause MS "Help" sucks), the software isn't "smart", MS doesn't want to clutter your mind w unnecessary commands, but having to access Tools, when a user friendly program might have a popup - "What do you want to do?" and ACTUALLY offers relevant choices or ANSWERS a guery with something relevant would help. How many times have you used MS "Help" only to get 30 hits, NONE of which were relevant? I have done that plenty, and yet, their search algorithm was apparenrtly written in 1972, and they will NOT change it, thank you (you moron for asking for help, we don't care about you...). So, ehough of my mild criticism. Interesting article & follow-up posts.

go to Tools, Auto Correct Options and click the Smart Tags tab.

Make sure you have the "Label text with smart tags" checkbox marked. And the "Show Smart Tag Actions buttons" checked.

Then under "Recognizers" make sure the "Person Name (Outlook e-mail recipients)" is checked.

I'd also check "Person Name (English)" for good measure because I had to mark that one before mine worked.

Note: It appears this only pulls Contact information from your default Contact folder in Outlook. So keep that in mind.

What about subfolders in Contact folders?

I tried doing it with a contact in a Subfolder. The SmartTag recognizes the name, but it can't find the contact when you try to Insert Address, or even just Open Contact.

In addition to adjusting my smart tag settings, I found that it was necessary to make adjustments to some of my contacts. For example, the individuals name could not also be in the company name field or included in the address block. So, if it doesn't work after you make the smart tag adjustements look at the entries in your contact fields.

This is OK BUT - you have to set up smart tags first before you can use this option by going to Customise and moving it to the tool bar!!!!!!???
OR perhaps everyone should have this done automatically on first installation??

An apostrophe in a contact's name causes this to fail.

I have a contact whose last name has an apostrophe in it and although I got the purple underline identifying the smart tag, I kept getting a message that Outlook encountered an error or at other times that the contact did not exist. When I removed the apostrophe Word was able to find and insert the address. NOTE: The apostrophe needs to be removed from both the displayname and full name fields.

Maryanne are you reading these comments? It sounds like you skipped some steps in writing the article.

I don't know where to go to find the settings in 2007 and the article doesn't say.

When I click on the Smart tag for a name, it only shows the following Autocorrect options:
- Undo automatic capitalization
- Stop autocaptitalizing First Letter of Sentence
-----------------------
Control Autocorrect options

Now...that shows a settings folder:

Choose the Smart Tags tab | select the Person Name (English) and Person Name (Outlook email recipients) entries | Press OK.

That seems to be what should be done, but the drop-down menu still does not appear. I have all of my contacts in subfolders too.

Won't work with Subfolders

Just FYI, I think it doesn't work for you due to having contacts in subfolders. Since it is so sensitive to handling apostrophes in a name, I'm pretty sure it's sensitive to going beyond the primary contacts folder. I tested with my contact; it worked when in Contacts but did not work when I moved it to a subfolder. When in a subfolder I got the insert address option, but then got a "Microsoft Outlook could not find the requested contact." error.

With the couple of adjustments listed, it does work well with Word 2007. Nice feature. It would be nice to work with the company name too. Any ideas on making that work?
