The first iMac I ever met came out of the box, said to me (with several dialog boxes)"You appear to be attached to a network. Would you like me to determine settings?"Amazed, I dutifully clicked . Other than the fact that I wasn't running DHCP and had to configure a static IP address, in less than a minute it had brought me to Apple's web site and was searching for OS updates. Remarkable. I first became a systems admin in 1985 under HP-UX. There was no way that my Mom could have puzzled her way onto the Internet given that rule set. Mac OS and various Windows OS configurations have given that ability to the layperson. I'm still a Linux/Unix guy, but that's my preference. Kudos to the developers that figured out a way for the rest of the humans to access information, not just we geeks. For one thing, because of the mass market, it is now possible for me to build an absolutely blistering machine for a fraction of the cost. In 1968, there were only 2 reasons for a computer, to land on the moon, or to play PONG. And I realize that the moon landing took place in July 1969. They had to work the bugs out of it.Dan

Okay, so I may be showing my age, but I got the original Mac (signed by the crew on the inside of the case) with 128k of memory and dual floppy (400k) drives. No hard drive! The OS was on one floppy (can you imagine?) and the software and storage on the other. Now, those were the days! And how can one ever be "happily Macintosh free"? I have one lousy Sony XP machine on the edge of my 7 Macs and am only happy when I am on the Mac!Viva Apple!

At the end if your time was bad it post a sarcastic remark like "You should get a Volvo and get your cat on a walk"... ohh what times those... circa 1993.

I first played with the Macintosh Classic II. Black and white integrated monitor. From that I jumped to the LC at a local newspaper I started working in (at the early age of 16). Then my mother bought the LC III which I still have today saved in a box. It was veeeeery slow for the Illustrator Ver 3.2 with large full spread pages. It was enough though to play the Milliped and I switched to the b&w mode to play a race game (trying to remember the name!) with satiric comments at the end...

Apple shipped the iMac 10 years ago, which effectively put it back on the map in terms of design and being noticed in the marketplace. Apple rebuilt itself on the back of that funny looking machine as I noted in Classics Rock:http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/classic-tech/?p=165Apple market share is growing at a steady pace now. I still don't use one regularly, but the first one I did get to use was a Mac II LC. What was your first Mac, or are you happily Macintosh free?
