You are missing an important point
Do you not expect to get a raise? The whole point is older workers who are laid off or take an offered "early retirement" in order to hire a younger worker who is cheaper. Older workers who have worked for the same company for a while make what they do from raises, get longer vacations from time put in, not out of the starting gate. Looking for work is HARD in your fifties! Sure, you can hide data on a resume so that they don't know how old you are, but you also have to dumb it down because you don't gain all that experience in just a few years. Then, you interview and there is you age right in front of them on top of the fact that we want the higher end of the salary range.
