As soon as machine time became less expensive that developer time, consistently applying applying that equation was bound to get us where we are.

The level of sophistication we routinely apply to a simple business CRUD GUI application, would once have cost too much in machine time to execute and if achievable at all, would have took years to design and implement.

As long as the hardware and software boys keep on leapfrogging each other in terms of capacity and requirements, it will stay this way as well.

One often wonders what would happen if we hit a hardware wall though, the big boys would have to free up capacity in order to add more 'value' in the must have next version.
