I'm not so sure that this is completely effective, as you say. I'm not sure if CAPTCHA's are the answer either. I don't think anyone has put together a really good system for this that doesn't make life too hard for legitimate users, unfortunately.

A screen shot (in this blog page) of before & after the implementation of "NoBot control" would have added a great value to show what exactly the functionality looks like
