Ran into a really ugly one about the time of your post here...
In the middle of January I dealt with a rash of different infections on several computers. The worst one was one of the "Vundu/Vundo" variants that installed as a root kit! I had already removed several other bits of malware including one keystroke/password logger, and this computer appeared clean except when you tried to access any AV website or connected to the web outside a good firewall - then you'd have a boat-load of popup ads for adult oriented websites.
I researched through various forums and several AV Vendor websites and came up with this root kit answer. Before that though I downloaded MBAM on another computer and transferred via flash drive, each time I tried to install it it would crash and want to send an error report. Pretty much same results in safe-mode. tried several other AV & antimalware products with the same results. Finially got free AVG to install in safe mode and removed all but root-kit.
When I figured out I still had something on this computer and determined it was one of the many Vundu malware variants I started looking for a specific removal tool for it. After trying 3 specific tools that were supposedly for this virus with no luck, I did some googling and found Grisoft had a specific tool for it, that worked.
I keep three good site's link for downloading and even a security forum link in a text file on my flash drive. It's hard to always keep fresh copies of the anti-malware installs on the drive but with the text file it's just a matter of a couple of clicks and a cut & paste.
AVG and MBAM are my two favorites and work when the others don't even recognize an infection.
