Regarding your last paragraph; Back in the heyday of Heathkit, they did just that. They would send a free kit home with a secretary, accountant or janitor, and ask for feedback on the manual. Only after the problem areas had been addressed, would the manual be released. This was the hardware world, of course, but the same principles apply. Heathkits manuals were excellent.
