Avast! Home Edition and CCleaner for the one-two punch
I support home PC users on the side, and for years I had recommended AVG. But I didn't care for the kludgy product that was AVG 8.0, and then my own home system became infected. I've been using Avast! Home Edition for the past 18 months now, and have no problem recommending it to everyone I know.

It updates daily, providing a discreet visual and audible notification. It doesn't have the most intuitive user interface, so I do recommend reading one-page Installation Guide.pdf at http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html .
And yes, there is a required but free license activation via email, after the trial period expires. Thankfully, I've activated dozens of these installations, and I have yet to receive any follow-up spams.

Coupled this application with a scheduled boot-time cleaning by CCleaner, and I haven't had need for additional malware utilities.
