Of course I would like to buy a new Iphone with its latest features. That sounds cool. Oh boy ? another Apple announcement or "media event" for stuff we can buy that, if iTunes is any kind of reference point, will work slowly if at all, and people will pay a lot of money for it because they're that unfulfilled as people. At any rate, the Apple announcement is that they're unveiling a few things. There's Apple iTunes 9, and iTunes LP ? which will include visual aids like liner notes for downloaded music. Steve Jobs was there, and he also announced updates to the Apple Store, which will tell you what applications to get. There's new iPods and other products to get, too, and each Apple announcement leads to people getting payday cash to buy more stuff.

You even blame Apple for the 'musicians' you like creating poorly engineered, overly compressed audio on their CDs? It says as much about the chip on your shoulder as your taste in music. This discussion is about iPhone 3.0 - guess what, it has Cut & Paste and if you look in the App store you can get a fully featured CAD drawing program with FTP and email export for ?3.99For some real world practical examples of iPhone's use - I was on a train the other day cleaning out the temp files from a customers server using RDC on the iPhone. I've bought stuff off eBay while walking along the seaside cliffs. I watch TV in the dentists waiting room. I've skirted around traffic jams with Google Maps. Exchange email and Calendar events are pushed onto the iPhone. I can store and read .DOC .PDF .XLS .PPT .JPG It even opens readable docs inside .ZIP files. And this is all before ver 3.0

...was we each have our preferences and opinions.I don't understand the necessity of you belittling me because of my choices. But hey, go for it. If it makes you feel bigger or better about yourself.I carried around a basic Nokia phone for nearly a decade before plopping my money down on this device. I don't use it for business, but personally, I don't understand why it couldn't, everything I need to do at work could be accomplished with this phone. BTW, I don't carry a phone around for work. So in that case, I don't feel like I am able to comment on the business case. I don't believe I was trying 'to fool anyone'.I have to use an XP machine all day every day for work, but I know, personally, I can get done everything I need with my Macs easier, more efficiently and with less technical issues. And btw, the GUI Mac OS was around a long time before Windows... so when you start with the "they have nothing to offer that isn't already offered by someone else" crap you're just blowing your opinion again. Same goes for the "for less" BS. I know that there have been lots of discussions on this very board about this.I'd never pony up my money for an XBOX, who wants to waste their valuable time "playing" games? What ever your bias is against Apple and the iPhone, realize that is what it is. I don't see you discussing the merits of your choice, just squawking about how horrible the iPhone is.What does it matter what phone I carry? Sheesh... chill out.

Well, only a little but I don't drink coffee anymore and don't even drink pop unless it is caffeine free these days.Out of all of the reasons to laugh at the i-Phone craze, there is one rather minor point that was flawed. Nail me down and slap me silly! That's your only recourse? In Apple's defense, I do like their OS for MAC as it is excellent for audio/video rendering, beyond that they have nothing of real worth to offer that isn't already offered for less by someone else.As for proprietary, I also applaud that in this ever so cutting edge device that they will include the lastest technological advances this time, a headphone jack that is not proprietary! Well done Apple! I suppose they will seek to patent the 1/8" hedphone jack too now. I am sure you like your i-Phone, anyone owning one has been defending them since day one anyway. It's a fun toy and you can play with it and go 'WOW' as you enlarge and reduce pictures with your fingertips, amazing! You can sort through your pictures like a flip book, woweeeeeee! You can listen to overly compressed music, now THAT'S something! But you can do all that on an i-Pod without a contract too.As an entertaining toy, no problem (an X-Box with some games will be cheaper in the long run though, if that's the aim). As the business ready device people try to pretend it is, you're not fooling anyone.

yeah, maybe there'll be a 3rd phone out there sometime this year, but anyone who does upgrade to it will probably have to buy their apps over again due to some "change" that Apple will do something to force users to pay for everything again. The company doesn't care about the individual other than the $$$ in their pocket. The only real person that thinks of you is the support person who your on the phone w/ for over an hour that you convinced to do something for you for free.I'll go back to my original statement. I've owned 3 different Palm Pilots over the years, each with newer hardware, but the same OS. They didn't change it because it worked. there were things about it that I didn't like which Microsoft, Google, and Nokia fixed, but Apple is too reluctant to change.
http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/Dark blue only, or else it is the ancient EDGE network at a snail's pace.Once the USA (and Canada) catches up to the rest of the world on 3G coverage, it may be faster, for now the speed is available in a lot of countries but not so much here.though it seems to be half the price this time around, "The basic AT&T plan ? unlimited Internet and 450 minutes of calling ? now costs $70 a month instead of $60 (plus taxes and fees), and comes with no text messages instead of 200. (Adding text messaging costs at least $5 a month more.)True, iPhone 3G service now matches the plans for AT&T?s other 3G phones; still, by the end of your two-year contract, the iPhone 3G will have cost you more than the old iPhone, not less."apparently the phone is a much better quality this time, which should have been there before but they seemed to forget its a phone first and foremost. Too little too late? While the tower positioning GPS is supposedly improved, Apples still says it will not offer you turn by turn due to the tiny antenna. As for great new apps you can pay for "One coming program, called iCall, will give you free phone calls when you?re in a Wi-Fi hot spot."Uh, cell phone does that already for free, no extra apps needed; in fact I often park and make client calls while in the A&W parking lot using their wireless access for free dial tone.Apple is always playing catch-up and pretending they are cutting edge, fortunately there are enough people that don't realize this flaunted tech is old hat and they rush out to get in on it.i-Pods were behind the times as far as playback, file storage and transfer capabilities. The last iPhone was behind the times in its feature set, old touch technology, poor camera and limited functionality, and now the next gen i_phone won't even rival cell phones built several years ago.If MS was releasing this crap, it would be world breaking news about how crappy it is. When MS actually releases an OS that does more than others, it is ignored or ragged on based on past Windows issues. Our society of blind and easily lead consumers is a laughing stock worldwide, these are merely more examples of why.

http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/discussions/102-304835-3043009

I posted this in Aug of '07 in response to a friend's rave report on the new iphone... We're almost there.>I saw your writeup on the iPhone and thought to myself "well, nobody asked ME".>>I'll give the iPhone another look when these features are available...>>1) it?s built to AT&T/Cingulars system (but I'm on Verizon). And the AT&T Cingular infrastructure is a painfully SLOW system. And around here it has a very low tower density. And recently a new Cingular tower went in a few blocks north of me, and when I talked to one of the installation techs he commented that the site had NO web communications hardware in it. This is supposed to impress me with their excellent service?>>2) You can?t swap the SIM card with another phone if you drop the iPhone (two reasons: it?s built inside, and the card itself is a weird physical format card... >if you want to use a different phone while your iPhone is being fixed you have to BUY yet another sim card)>>3) you can't play MP3s (what would it cost to add the most common format on the planet?)> >4) no GPS (you have to tell Google maps where you are before you can tell it where you want to go).>It's not like GPS is a new technology... it's in the prepaid phones you can buy at the local 7-11... And you can't even add an external bluetooth GPS - the Bluetooth implementation is badly broken.>>5) no replaceable battery (my 8 year old Nokia had that?)>>6) the camera is only 2megapixel? And no zoom (not even digital zoom)?>>7) no AvantGo (my ancient Palm 3 has that)>>8) no Vindigo (local info) (ditto)>>9) no Adobe Flash in the browser - and that breaks a lot of stuff (how much would it have cost to include it?)>>10) no Adobe Acrobat (PDF reader) (ditto)>>11) no slide lid (which would prevent a scratched screen) (a slide lid could be 1/2 of a clamshell design, which I much prefer)>>12) no car cradle with external antenna (no antenna jack - and my 9 year old Nokia had that). And I need an external antenna where I drive.>>13) no way to connect an external keyboard (and have you priced out a bluetooth keyboard recently?)>>14) you can?t use an audio file as a ring tone. If I'd been on the design team I'd have made sure that was in. It's not like that's a new idea.>>15) can?t have different ring tones for different incoming calls (i.e. one for work, a second for spouse/kids, a third for extended family, a fourth for everybody else... again, not a new idea)>>16) can?t talk to a printer unless it?s a pricey bluetooth one... the iPhone can use the internet via a wireless network, why can't it talk to the printer on my home wireless network? You'd think that telling it that 192.168.1.10 is a laserjet-mp would be enough.>>17) can?t talk or sync to an Exchange server (the corporate mail server).>Better yet, fully synch with Outlook's Contacts, Calendar and Tasks (and make Categories work). >A low end blackberry can do that, why can't a "newer and better" product do it?>>18) The music playing app quits when you start up the browser. Hello, the mac multitasked 20 years ago, why can't the iphone?>>19) It's too slippery... you can't pinch it between your shoulder and your ear while you scramble for a pen and paper (you are forced to get a case).>>20) It needs MUCH louder ringtones and stronger vibrate feature. >>21) Bluetooth file transfer. Hello? It does bluetooth, why can't it do file transfer?>>22) be able to edit documents using a Bluetooth keyboard>>23) Why can't the landscape feature work on ALL the apps, and especially the keyboard? Or didn't anybody try to use IM in the R&D lab?>>24) Add iChat. Or is that too obvious?>>25) Add all the iCal features, and make them sync. At a bare minimum I'd like the To Do list to sync with iCal To Do pane.>>26) Where's the eBook reader?>>27) Why isn't there a Home key in the browser? Better yet, have a Home key and a couple of Prime keys (i.e. shortcuts to your two most favorite web sites)>>28) Why no Cut and Paste? Or does that have to wait for version 3 ?>>29) The camera sucks - no flash, no physical shutter button, no zoom. I can live without the first two, but I need zoom. And you can't flip it around to face you for the future Chat/picturephone application.>>30) A natural application that's missing - a password vault. Or doesn't the R&D team actually USE the stuff they develop?>>31) If you miss a call/email/text there is no visual or audio repeat notify feature (i.e. beep, flash, or vibrate every 5 min until you check your phone - >just do SOMETHING). >The Blackberry uses a single bicolor LED for this - it changes from green to red and back. >>32) I have to return to the main menu every time I need to see if I have any email or messages waiting. Every other phone I've seen has an icon at the top of the screen indicating that you have mails/texts/voice mails waiting. Some even tell you how many. >>33) 64-bit editions of Windows are not supported. Yes, that's official Apple policy.>>34) You can't even set up the iPhone unless you have an iTunes account. Why? It's not like you can use an iTunes clip as a ringtone.>>35) Obviously Apple hasn't figured out that the world knows what a shift key is for. Adding a shift key to the front of the unit would have made the user interface so much intuitive/easier to use.>>Compared to current cellphone products the iPhone falls flat on its face in everything but sex appeal and esthetics.>>Apple does every other product so well (even the Newton - which was a PDA that was well ahead of its time), why they couldn't have looked at each of the top 20 phones out there and done a feature consolidation chart and then design something that was better than all put together is beyond me. >>Personally, I'll wait for version 2.0 and reconsider? >>And I can't be the only one with these complaints.> >For being a version 1.0 it's a pretty good product, but it could have been an excellent one. >>Mike

Buying new devices in order to get upgraded

http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/discussions/102-304835-3042991

What's sad? They upgrade and you have to buy a new phone and contract then find some way of utilizing the old one usually meaning you have to pass off the old contract too. Just like the iPod, with its forced obsolesence, allows them to hook people into the 'i-Game' and screw them over anytime they want to generate some more revenue.Proprietary ANYTHING has never been good vaue for money to anyone except the company selling it.I have worked in coutless industries that offer proprietary products, in each and every case, the non proprietary goods offer better value for money and a happier user experience overall.iPhone software changes version so all they do is make it a proprietary hardware/feature upgrade and all of a sudden you neeed a new phone.MS has changed thier mobile OS a lot over the past few years, all functionality is already available on the phone so it's just a software upgrade when they make it do somethign new. HTC made the phone, MS writes the FREE software so the software/hardware is not proprietary and I just get free download to use new features, I don't have to pay i-money to the i-Store, or send it to the i-Sales rep for thier proprietary i-software or pay for a new i-phone.If I had a device that needed replacing in order to update it and gain new features, beyond for an entirely new far more superior device, I'd feel pretty scammed.Everyone's still happy with an i-Phone because they believe they are cutting edge. It's no different than selling sound in that respect, I can TELL someone they are hearing something and they will agree with me, whether they hear it or not, its just common psychology and the way the human ego works. nobody wants to say they don't have sophisticated taste, so when I speak of vast, spacial imaging they nod and say 'Oh, Yes! Do YOU hear the vast spacial imaging too, dear?' when often they don't even know what spacial imaging is. 2 weeks later they are convincing thier friends that they too hear 'spacial imaging'. If I tell someone they are hearing warm tone due to advanced lower midrange characteristics of a driver, they don't question it, they just eat it up and then tell thier friends all about the great lower midrange characteristics they are hearing too. Most consumers are programmable sheep, they want/need to be lead, they don't want to feel left behind by technology they don't really understand and the marketing giants like Apple depend on that. Look at BOSE for example. They buiild the some of cheapest speakers on the planet and pawn them off as the cutting edge AND MANY PEOPLE ACTUALLY BUY INTO IT! You can do better for $299.00 with a Panasonic speaker in a box system that you can by investing $1599.00 on a BOSE Accoustimass System, but they convince you that you are hearing things that aren't really there. Thier speakers can only physically reproduce 56% of actual audible frequencies, however they pass them off as the ultimate in sonic perfection. A pair of free speakers on Craigslist will outperform them almost every time. They even go as far as renaming old, common technology so they can patent it and sell it as unique. The iPhone, as a smartphone device, just falls short if being useful on both personal and business fronts. Personal use: poor tonal quality compared to actual phones, terrible camera compared to even the entry level FREE cell phone. I can browse the web and dowload apps, games and junk to my cell phone too, but I don't bother.Business use: it lacks any worthy computing features for business use. It's neither a good phone, a good camera nor a good computer, so what is it beyond an i-Pod with a touch screen and a way to buy more stuff from the i-Store.
