Well, I've had up-close experience with getting railroaded right out of a company, along with my compatriots, by a wannabe manager; one who had the temerity to promoted themselves by taking credit for our ideas and products. That manager also systematically fired us so their incompetence and unprofessional behaviour could continue undiscovered. They weren't exactly a manager, more like a manipulator. They would randomly bully team members, and kept us on a need-to-know basis, parting with just enough information so you couldn't quite fit all the pieces together. New ideas were demanded of us at every meeting then fed to upper management as their very own brainchild. If ideas weren't forthcoming, the implied threat of termination was always there. Needless to say this person's management style affected the whole department in an unhealthy way.
There is a happy ending, however. After I left, it was a matter of months before several comrades brought charges against this person. Charges were settled out-of-court, the manager exposed for what they were, and the department was shut down for good.
So I would have to disagree that you may not get a positive reaction after supporting another's agenda, especially if they appear self-serving at your expense, or are somehow threatened by what they think you know or won't tell them.
