Why don't you just enter a column break from the Insert Break dialog box?

Ctrl+Shift+Enter = Column Break

Best practice for a long document: Format paragraph to stay together or keep with next, so an automatic column break will not mess up the formatting. (That way, you don't have to redo everything if you change margins or font size.)
