As for konqueror profiles, I change the command on the "home" icon to open it in file browser profile. (which means I get rid of dolphin, yuk)
Just right click the icon, on the application tab wipe the dolphin command and add this:
kfmclient openProfile filemanagement
Note the second P is capital. I then open the tree view, resize the window and select "save view profile" on it. This way it opens the way I want every time.
I also go to "configure konqueror" and under file management select "show "delete" on the menu," or words to that effect. It puts a "delete" on the context menu that bypasses the trash.

Jack (or anyone else), do you know if there's an equivalent "server status" application to run with gnome?
It would be ideal for my purposes.

As far as I can tell, the GNOME project doesn't want anything useful in it's options / tools.
they refuse to set up a unified control center for gnome config, or anything else that would make the bad ui design less obnoxious.

only changed the name.
they used to be called links to applications on KDE, shortcuts on windows.
and the changing absolutely everything "just because" for KDE 4 is why it will never be installed.
they ripped to much functionality out of it for it to be usable.
