Have you looked at Asheville? It's about an hour north of Spartanburg, so you could check it out on the same trip. More mountainous than G-SP, more likely to get some winter snow, easy access to Smokey Mtns. NP, Appalachian Trail, whitewater rafting. Very active arts community.
