I've been using Subversion on my main home machine (Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope) to manage those pesky bits of my profile under my home directory, /etc file changes, keep a history of installed packages, and so forth. Every so often I use svnadmin to dump the repo to a USB key in case I need to rebuild these if the system crashes and needs to be re-installed.
For file management on linux with subversion, fsvs works like a charm.
