interviews take up everyones time. Placing an ad on the paper or company website used to meet advertising requirements. Of course, the interview might be a morale booster to counter charges of nepotism.
One hint - as you are being lead to the interview room, look for empty cubes / offices (or cubes without a computer, but full of junk). Layoffs? or are people leaving? Perhaps ask "I see a lot of empty offices / cubes. Is the company planning to expand?"
