Boss Lied
Maybe I was naive. It was my first job after leaving the Navy, my resume didn't fill the requirements, but I knew I was up to the task. I said I would come in at the low end of the salary if I could get and evaluation in six months.
Six months came and went so did eight and nine with almost weekly inquiries by me. Somewhere around the ten month mark I was finally told that it was not worth the paperwork to do a six month review four months late. It was better to wait until the 1 year point and maybe get an additional 0.5% increase.
The resume went out the next day. A few weeks later I had an offer by a great company with a significant increase. Of course they offered to match the offer, but I explained that it was too late the trust was lost.

I almost left my current job because of a new manager. He had no experience with Visual Studio. The new head of software only thought in JAVA. Between the two of them they tried to JAVA conventions on to our group. Instead of quitting, as the senior Visual Studio developer, I just pretty much did what I knew was correct. As long as the work was on time and the projects were successful I was left alone. They have both moved on.
