My last assignment - write why did I resign
Sometimes saying nothing is not an option. Early on in the two-week cycle, my bosses boss (dept manager) asked me to write a memo about why I resigned. I was still employed (this was not an "exit interview") and I was expected to do it to my usual standards (I.E. tell the truth). I came up with several pages, detailing (and ranking) every factor ranging from my boss (70%) to the traffic tie-ups leaving work (5%). The company did something about the tie-ups by moving to a place which was on the street system and not tied to an access road.
One other "touchy" subject. If you tell your boss, she/he is supposed to communicate this to everyone who needs to know. If she/he sits on this knowledge, you're in a touchy situation because you don't want to break confidentiality but don't want to burn your coworkers.
