I recall a Mac malware problem...
related by a member on ZDNet that came in a limewire attack, that left itself on the HDD and could control the formatting process, somehow and reappear after even a low level format!!

I assume it found a way to place itself in a cluster section and fool the hard drive controller that the section was marked for damage. The controller would have no reason to touch a spot like that again ever, in my estimation.

They were never able to rid themselves of it.

It just goes to show, OSX,Windows, Linux, it doesn't matter when you use risky behavior.
