This gadget rocks! The only way it could be better is if MS included it so it'd be on every PC
The install procedure is a bit different though. Just double-click the .gadget file and then click Install.
Which of the following Network Troubleshooting command line tools do you use most often?
PathPing
Netstat
Which would you like to see as a Gadget?
Are there other commnd line tools that you would like to see converted to a Gadget?

traceroute
or
tracepath
mtr
nmap
dig ( it so much better than nslookup which is deprecated )
host
nc(netcat)

The gadget doesn't install in my Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 (dutch version)but comes with an "error on webpage" message and "rule 8: document.getElementByID(...) is empty or no object".
What is wrong?

The command that this error message is referring to comes from the initializing routine and it seems that the object that is the background image for the gadget icon.
I would surmise, that the gadget did not install correctly/completely. If that is the case, you should attempt to uninstall the incomplete version (right-click and select uninstall, from the Gadget Gallery interface). Then, reinstall the IPConfig Gadget.

The IPConfig gadget doesn't reside in the Gadget Gallery Interface, so I can't uninstall it this way. Is there another way to achieve this?
...show up in the Gadget Gallery interface, then it is not installed.
Check the instructions in the readme and try to install it again.

I skipped the part to install the Elevate HTML power toy. I did so now, but i don't understand the "run as administrator command to run the tool". I have no idea where the power toy has been installed and what i have to do with it.
...confusing the the two versions of this tool.
Windows Vista IP Configuration Tool is an HTA and it requires that you install the Elevate HTML Application PowerToy.
The IPConfig Gadget will prompt you for elevation when it is needed.
Try and reinstall the IPConfig Gadget folloing the instructions...if you get an error message, please copy it down verbatum and let me know.

When I reinstall the gadget (e.a. open the file IPConfig.gadget with the "windows sidebar" program) the only thing that happens is that the sidebar opens on the screen, that's all, no message, nothing else happens.
...the manual way:
The quickest way to access the Gadgets folder in Vista is to press [Windows]R to access the Run dialog box and then type the following command in the Open text box:
%userprofile%\appdata\local\microsoft\windows sidebar\gadgets
Once you access the gadgets folder, look for the IPConfig.gadget folder. If it is there, delete it.
Then, copy the IPConfig.gadget folder that you downloaded to the gadgets folder.
Now, access the Gadget Gallery interface and double click the IPConfig icon to install the gadget.

The manual way succeeded, but in a slightly different way. I manually unzipped the IPConfig.zip file to a folder, renamed that folder (not the zipfile) to IPConfig.gadget and copied it to the gadgets folder the way you described. OK. I retried the standard installation method and that still doesn't work. Is this because my Vista doesn't use its internal unzip function anymore? I had to install 7-ZIP. How can I repair the internal unzip function of Vista? Was that the problem here? Thanks for all your help!
where can I find the same tool for xp
...designed for Windows Vista. Windows XP doesn't support Sidebar Gadgets.
The link to which you so kindly posted in the article.
I think I'll be recommending it in another forum for all the folks who can't mange this stuff at the command line. Very handy, I think.

Sir you have outdone yourself and made a portable gadget via thumb to any vista 32 or 64 bit, and guessing, the same would be true (from the responses) for 7...a giant shortcut for assessing IP info at a glance. If I were to change anything it would be cosmetic...the gadget is not in line with all the other gadgets...I have 2 rows of gadgets and they are completely transparent except on hover and a clean desktop. the gadget skin should fit in line and maybe change the icon to IP or something like it and the buttons a bit bigger and, for kicks and giggles, a changable color palatte. And offer it on the microsoft vista gadget website. Thanks for a great tool.
..the compliments. Glad that you like the Gadget.
I'll take your suggestions into consideration.

Could the hot spot for the different options be all of the text instead of just the small radio button? Just eliminate the radio buttons and make the text be the button. Less mousing and easier targets.
I just installed this on Windows 7 business edition. I used the command line to rename the file extension of the .zip file to .Gadget
C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets>
ren *.zip *.Gadget
Bam! Works great. Thank you for this cool gadget!

I installed it the long way by creating a new folder named "IPConfig.Gadget" in C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\ and then extracting all files to the new folder. Works like a charm!
Manual installation is actually very easy, if you know what you need to do.
remote pinging option should be there
I must be missing something. When i rename the zip file it is still a .zip file. I added the .gadget but it didn't pop up with the install screen when i selected windows sidebar under the open with submenu. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
