When running Parallels of VMware Fusion it puts in a virtual NIC which has a MAC address of its own, which is then registered on his college's LAN not the acutal MAC address of the host MAC machine.

He's basically making another point where BootCamp is easier than using Parallels or VMWare Fusion.
