how much money do you have available to spend on education and / or living expenses? Education costs can often involve purchasing used equipment to build a home network.

If you only have five months in the field, it's very early to be discussing a consulting career. You're still learning new stuff at work every week. Ask your supervisors what kind of experience or knowledge you need.

bleh!
I know little about security, and nothing about the skills and abilities required to advance in your job market. I was only explaining what santee meant.

Again, find someone in your area who is doing the work you would like to do. Ask him or her what experience and certifications they recommend or would like to see in a potential employee.
