Format to continue? Seems harsh
Unless your environment keeps the backups absolutely current on a daily basis, you'll be bulldozing user data. Maybe that's OK in your location - with some sort of "/home" volume elsewhere.
My personal experience with Acronis has been so bad, I asked for my money back. (Didn't get it, but that's why I mention it here.)
My environment is a sea of laptops, which manage to dock for a few hours at a time, and, if they're lucky, the backups will run uninterrupted. I do warn users of impending doom, but as usual, it goes unheeded.
My own laptop suffered a disk failure last week, and I opted to go OS upgrade versus backup/restore, as my Vista instance wasn't properly getting MS updates. If I did the "restore" I'd wind up with the same problems I already had.
A system "refresh" of the OS and Apps can be a very good thing from time to time.
