Amazing

That is absolutely amazing. 322 terrabytes a second. I can't get my head around that.

Agreed!

Have to admit those numbers are seriously impressive.

322 Tbits
gfjim 10th Mar 2010
so roughly 40 TBytes... still pretty impressive
Now if speeds were that fast, I would fill up my 1 tb external hd in like 10 minutes! Awesome feat for Cisco!

Why was the ipad even mentioned here? Anyone who says they can give 40 terabytes a second and prove it shouldn't have to compete with an oversized ipod for your affections.
than that of another gadget from which to do internet and a few simple apps.

The Cisco news is in many ways a whole lot bigger and more important news than any announcement of a new reader or a new pad or a new mobile device.

Exactly
DiscipleN2k 10th Mar 2010
Exactly what I was thinking. "...up to 322 Terabits per second, which enables the entire printed collection of the Library of Congress to be downloaded in just over one second; every man, woman and child in China to make a video call, simultaneously; and every motion picture ever created to be streamed in less than four minutes." Yet, "...it?s no iPad announcement." I'm speechless.
While Cisco may need to do more to market this really amazing technology, they have been their typical understated self. But the real issue is at what cost?... notwithstading the "partnership" pitch.

IMHO this will take off only in three to five years when the economic outlook gets really bright.

If the economic outlook remains bleak, people will stay home, they'll want in-home entertainment options and those will likely be delivered by broadband connections.

Businesses will continue to look to alternatives to costly travel options and institute more video conferencing and such.

I'd say Cisco is positioning itself very well to take advantage of current demand and future growth trends!
So, how' this going to help the dial-up connection to the internet I have at home? Cable Co. has no interest in running cable to my address, and Great-Great-Grandma Bell only understands copper wire.

in the not too distant future.

I know of an application (actually, a series of related applications), that will need that kind of download/upload speed. It's not fully developed yet, but it's coming.

The providers of Internet services are limited to the equipment they have, this router will allow video without the herky jerky and latency seen in video conferencing.

Think video phones.

oh and the cost I hear is around $100k each
Basically, w/o counting any overhead, 1Gbit runs on 1GHz frequency on the wire. So this 322Tbit/s = 322 THz?!? I doubt. It's rather trunk throughput of the router, not a speed of single router port. Agree?

overall capacity
gfjim 11th Mar 2010
I presume the 322 Tb refer to aggregate forwarding plane capacity
