While I agree that focusing on your core skill set applicable to the job you are applying for is a good method, do not underestimate the power of working for a good organisation in your industry.

Working in publishing it is key to have proven knowledge and relationships which are gained at a major publishing house and that is seen as far more important than the skill set, as those can be learnt, while relationships take much longer to build.
