I may need to move my dsl modem to another room (I think the current outlet is faulty) but leave my router at his current location. I was wondering what the max recommended length for the cable between the router and modem is so that it doesn't affect the quality of the connection. thx
I thought I read somewhere that it should not be more than 6 feet from the modem to the router but if I can go to 328 feet then I'm ok. thx
The ideal location for your DSL modem is right at the service panel where your phone line enters your home. That way, you can install what is known as a POTS splitter and not have to install filters at each phone jack.
When you install a DSL modem other than at the phone line service entrance, you need to make sure that there are no line filters between the service panel and the phone jack. Plus, you need to know that the installed phone line is of a quality such that it will not degrade the DSL signal.
Another problem that you avoid if you install a POTS splitter is that a phone or other device on the phone line will not load down your DSL signal.
