it's not a problem of which one is better...
The simple fact is, KDE has completely re-written and re-designed the desktop much like GNOME is doing it now - and several years back! And that should be a well known thing to anybody writing about desktops...
Let it be known I'm not trying to start any kind of flame-war here about who's done something first. I don't claim KDE is a better system or that KDE's developers are better people just on account of that - but you can't pretend they don't exist and that GNOME has just now, out of the blue, said "it's over with the desktop as we had it - let's revamp it!" - so saying something like, and I'm repeating myself here: "Finally someone has looked at the current desktop metaphor and said "It's over!"" - is just completely ignorant of the facts.
