RE: 10 mistakes Linux newbies make
"Although things are better today, you still can't avoid heavy command line typing for some serious requirements. RAID for example is something that will not work if you don?t have deep deep deep Linux knowledge."
Huh? You can set up RAIDS in Linux with a simple partition manager. No command line usage needed.
"DON?T LOG IN AS ROOT! ?????????????????????
This can be compared to Windows UAC presented in Vista. Well, we all know how good Vista was accepted ?
So, I should hire Jack Wallen for any action that requires root privileges?? Or should I ask somebody else to do the entire job for me? I guess, we are all stupid users which are allowed to use nothing else than web browsers. Real IT experts are the ONLY ones allowed to type commands as root!! This is ludicrous."
No, he said not to LOG IN as root, not type commands as root. Using SUDO, for example. I know some people who, when faced with a login window for KDE/GNOME, would promptly type root for the username and put in the password. THIS IS A NO-NO. Typing commands as 'sudo ' when you're a non-root user is the accepted form, not being root with all it's priveleges when typing commands.
"People give up after a while when they realize that simple actions requires hours of reading the manual"
Not really trying to nitpick, but what 'simple actions' are you talking about that require 'reading the manual'? And please, don't go back with your time-machine to the Slakware days. Those are long past us (should I relate the difficulty of mounting RAID devices in DOS?).
