Thanks! So far, all tested Rescue CD work
Thanks; downloading now!
It's a testimony to Linux maturity that not one of the scanners I tested (Avira, AVG, Kaspersky, F-Prot, Dr Web and the inscrutible Trinity Rescue Kit) has failed to boot, or crashed while scanning, as tested on two PCs with plenty of files to scan. BitDefender and Panda still to test.
Most or all of these don't update the ISO with current av signatures, but will accept these via USB and/or live download. I prefer the USB option so as to reduce online bandwidth and risks; YMMV.
My other test criteria, are:
- are fresh ISO downloads up to date?
- can updates be read via USB?
- can updates be downloaded "live"?
- direct CD boot, or fall thru to HD?
- must I set anything before scanning?
- are they safely read-only?
- do they auto-fix malware?
- if so, can that be controlled?
- USB-booted versions instead of CDs?
- do drivers work with my Ethernet?
- do drivers work with my WiFi?
- how easy to use?
- how easy is it to save the logs?
- do they come with other useful tools?
- is the rest of the Linux OS available?
- can I use these regularly?
Also nice is that all downloads were quick and trouble-free; no scratching around with torrent clients etc., as may be inevitable with large "goodwill" projects.
