Trust and accountability are themes that I hear again and again in my interviews for the Wide Teams podcast. One point about trust that is often overlooked is that in a distributed team as in any other kind, the best way to encourage behavior is to model it. So if you want your team members to be transparent and accountable, you need to make a special effort to be transparent and accountable to them despite the distances and communications challenges separating you.

This sounds good, but there is a increasing tendency seen whereby the onsite team is taking advantage of the offshore team and trying to get the maximum output with whatever it takes, for ex: working long hours, through the night. This is creating a wall between distributed teams, in some cases. One key element about trust in distributed teams is 'forgetting the fact that the team is distributed' and working as a seamless team, and also transparency of the daily activities of all members. It doesnt mean much for ex: when the onsite developer located near the customer spends 5 hrs daily in meetings which have hardly any output.

If you make a mistake and own it, you don't lose my trust. I may feel I have to spend more time to make sure you understand what I want but that is different to losing my trust, so don't misconstrue it.If you make a mistake and try to hide it (ie lie about it), don't expect me to trust you again...
I want to add one more point.Trust should not be volatile:Trust should not be indirectly proportional to the number of mistakes a team member commits. I find that managers tend to over trust and love their team mates when they are going good, but one mistake from them, the trust plummets down. This is unhealthy for a team, and gives teammates an impression that don't have any place value/ respect in the team.
