Not that anyone doubts Sheldon Cooper's geek status by now, but here's a couple more telltale signs he's a geek:

1. He uses behavioral psychology principles to modify the behavior of people in his life. Doing so, by itself, isn't geeky. Every dog trainer does it. What's geeky is citing B.F. Skinner as a source while doing so.

2. He has just a little bit of trouble relating to normal human beings.

Not a just little bit trouble, but a lot specially with Penny, that is the central point of fun of the show. Other geeky thing of Shreldon is that he is always showing how Windows is so easy vs Linux

Also, that his idea of fun on a weekend is backing up his HD, reformatting it, and reloading all his operating systems.

Halloween

One thing is having a flash costume, another is to go to a Halloween party as the Doppler Effect. Best costume ever

Mark of Genius
paul@... 14th Jul 2010
The Doppler Effect costume was a mark of genius - from the scriptwriters...
He takes offense at being called a "rocket scientist". In his opinion it might as well be said that his is a toll taker at the bridge.
He spends his Friday night reformatting and reinstalling Linux on his computer.
This one quote sums it up:
"While others have fallen prey to the inexplicable need for human contact.
My work will go on interrupted and social relationships will continue to baffle and repulse me."

Sheldon is Awesome.
Let's not forget Sheldon's alternative version of a well known game: "Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock." First time I saw that, I laughed soooo hard! It's still funny.
I think Leonard is a geek while Sheldon has a social disorder.

Sheldon is a meta-geek, or a a geek's geek. He makes other geeks around him feel like frat bros in comparison.
My favorite quote is the "Post hoc ergo propter hoc" to his mum over the phone.

That he built his own CAT scanner (with radiation burns and the unfortunate demise of it's first occupant).

Meta-geek. Excellent term coinage.
Although I watch and like The Big Bang, as far as I know the comic book and sci-fi thing is overdone. I spent many years at University (under- and post-graduate) and have always worked in a field with a scientific background. Of all the people I've known none had a comic book or sci-fi hangup. Comic books and sci-fi are not about reality, science is. Don't most scientists look down on such baloney? On a program about The Big Bang some real scientist they interviewed said the comic book thing was overdone. As for Abby Sciuto, a junkie, yes, a pole dancer, yes, someone on psychotropic medication, yes, but a "brilliant scientist", very definitely no. What nonsense.

My uncle is a physicist and he said he never met anyone like Sheldon Cooper in his field. That being said, the show is awesome and he is the best character, so not hating here, just making an observation!
"Why did the chicken cross the Mobius strip? To get to the same side!"

I had to get a piece of paper and make a strip before my English-major wife could understand the joke.
Apparently none of the previous comments take into account the fact that Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj work at Caltech. You cannot compare that environment to a normal place of employment, or any other school, for that matter. My husband has 3 degrees from Caltech, and my eldest son also graduated from there. As far as not being into sci-fi, after finals his freshman year, he and a dozen of his classmates spent the entire night at our house watching Star Wars (IV, V, VI). I am married to a geek, and my child is a geek, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Favorite Sheldon line - "I am not insane, my mother had me tested".
