I'll need to think about it, but off the top of my head, the NIS authentication for even local machine with a unique login in it.
the NFS share that login makes as your home instead of local files would be a more secure storage area for sensitive information containing files.

have to look at the network authentication systems to see which, if any, could help give that breakdown.
