have a look at Windows Update
If "by default" means "what is on the install disk" then true, you'll get minimum support or at least older driver versions.
If "by default" means "what is available from Windows Update" then the driver lets gets longer. It doesn't mean the drivers will work, but it may have them available. (T60 wifi drivers are a pig to work with)
It may be desirable to get the latest Vendor provided driver but that doesn't mean that such drivers are not available through Windows native mechanisms.
