newer hardware, firmware dependent hardware
Last wireless hardware I had real issue with was a PCMCIA Linksys 54g. At the time, Mandriva was my preference and it's install had a very clean "can't find a driver, do you want to use the windows driver?" which resulted in ndiswrapper being used in the background. From the user perspective, it was just a checkbox or radio button selection during setup.

The R61 and X201 Lenovos both require a firmware blob for the wireless. Both worked fine the first try by simply installing firmware-iwlwifi though I have also tried the fwcutter method which was a pretty simple manual process.

My gpu issues are currently due to running Debian Testing instead of a production ready distribution though the Nvidia and older Intel gpu had no issues under Debian Stable with the non-free drivers.
