It's been interesting reading the wide ranging opinions posted to these surveys. Without a complete set of figures showing Brand vs OEM vs Model vs numbers produced however it is unlikely an irrefutable 'Loser or Winner' will emerge.
Some posters attempted to bring in software / support / OS / warranty and other issues into the mix.
Please ignore these red herrings, the objective of the survey was to find the most 'unreliable/reliable' Laptop Brands by virtue of their built in 'Hardware' reliability.
i.e.which brands broke the most/least that was not a result of user action, software failure or enviromental issues.
Through all that what does strike me, from the number of posts made, is the level of overall Laptop (un)reliability. Whether you love or hate any given brand / model the simple fact is to many Laptops are breaking due to sloppy design or build quality.
When put into context the recorded 17 - 25.6% failure rate (
http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/laptop-reliability-1109/) is frightening.
This means 2 to 3 laptops in every 12 are going to go back for a hardware warranty repair.
I think that is disgusting and is a very big black mark against the design/quality standards used.
Put another way, how would you react if 2 to 3 eggs in every dozen you bought at the Supermarket were rotten? or a quarter of the matches in a box wouldn't strike?
Yep you'd be pretty hosed off.
Yet this failure rate seems to be acceptable to the consumer when it comes to Laptops.
Is it because they hope it will happen to the other guy?
Personally I DO NOT find it acceptable that the next Laptop I buy has a 1 in 5 or 6 chance of being a dud.
I can live with it being slow, I can live with it lacking the bells and whistles of the dearer options.
But by jepers I at least expect it to keep going for a 'reasonable' length of time. i.e. it should be 'Reliable'
So what would we hope happens as a result of these surveys?
(Fingers crossed) that the CEO's of these companies grasp that their 'good enough' is NOT 'good enough'
That is 'all' Laptop brands, not one brand in particular, but all of them. The Laptop industry is 'not' performing when it comes to Laptop reliability and if surveys like this bring that fact to their attention and causes them to lift their game then it has been an effective survey.
