Alright, we go to the manual installation of Flash in both systems. Usually the last step for both installation is unnecessary though it wouldn't hurt to check for a successful installation.
For Win7, my steps are like this:
1. Download the Flash Player from the Flash Player Download Center.
2. Select Save when prompted.
3. Open the folder the file was saved in.
4. Double click the file you downloaded.
5. Agree to the license.
6. Walk through the installation wizard.
While for Ubuntu:
1. Open up a terminal window.
2. Enter the command sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer and hit Enter.
3. Type your user password when prompted.
4. Choose 'Yes' to proceed with installation.
Total steps with installation using browser:
Win7: 10 steps
Ubuntu: 10 steps
Winner: none (draw)
But if you ask me which step is less user-friendly, I'd say typing commands in the terminal, if compared to a few clicks needed in Windows. TBH I never think the terminal is more user-friendly than GUI because a user may need to memorize cryptic commands and their syntaxes just to perform a simple task as app installation. The terminal does not tell us immediately what we can do; it doesn't tell us the apt-get tool is there, it doesn't tell us what sudo is for, and using apt-get is feasible only if we know exactly the package name beforehand, rendering most first time users felt dumbfounded. At least GUI-based installation in Windows guides the user at every steps because the user can see all available commands that comes with the GUI (I don't have to elaborate this).
For me the key for user-friendliness is comfortability. I'm not comfortable of having to switch between mouse and keyboard too often just to get my tasks done. That being said, I'm more comfortable with installation routine in Windows (say the manual installation of Flash) because I don't need to move my hand from the mouse just to switch over to keyboard input, especially when I need my hand to be on the mouse most of the time, thus I'd say Windows is more user-friendly to me. Yeah, maybe I'm wrong. I can type my username and password using only one hand but I don't think typing "sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer" using only my left hand is more user-friendly either.

You do NOT have to install flash in Ubuntu via command line. I could have also demonstrated how you can install it this way:
1. Open up Ubuntu Software Center.
2. Search for "flash" (no quotes).
3. Click the Install button for the Adobe Flash plugin.
4. Open your browser and enjoy.

I hope you were not missing my point. Similarly in Win7 installing Flash also requires 4 steps as already explained in the above article (using browser of course because Windows have no tool equivalent to software center or package manager). But then again the unavailability of a central software management tool in Windows could be a good thing too, because it might be redundant as most Windows users are comfortable with browsing for software over the net or just copying the executable installer from other PC.
By the way, If I were to demonstrate how to install Flash via software center in Ubuntu, this is how it would be:
1. Open up Ubuntu Software Center.
2. Search for "flash" (no quotes).
3. Click the Install button for the Adobe Flash plugin.
4. Enter admin password when prompted.
5. Open your browser and enjoy.
Yes, there are 5 steps required, unless you are logged in as root.

Having used windows since 1993 and linux + win for the last 4 years. I absolutely agree. The Ubuntu incarnation of Linux is by far the most user friendly system out there (Macs included imho).
But you're being overly friendly towards win7. It may stack up evenly in the point-and-click department but when it comes to commandline and manual installation it's still living in 1980s.
The Win 7 manual for example installation is far more than 6 steps, if only in sheer number of mouse clicks. Add to that mysterious command like %APPDATA% what does that even mean? (yeah *I* know but ...).

And what about "being overly friendly towards command line"? I think it's not about comparing them based installation methods but rather what most users are comfortable and convenient with. It doesn't matter whether this majority users are the "dumbed-down" users or not but it clearly shows that's what average most users want; which is less dependency on command line or in other words, for command line to be less significant on Linux. Sometimes I wonder why every time people talk about Linux, they always focus on CLI and terminal like they can't live without it. Why make things complicated when you can use simpler path? The only thing I see Linux CLI being better than Windows is the possibility to save commands as executable text files which can be edited and run later so user may not need to remember the commands and the syntax.
By the way we really can't expect everybody to learn and follow our steps when we clearly have technical advantages (knowing how to work with CLI). It may be true that some operations need to be done via CLI but chances are average users would never use or need to know about it. Besides having to rely on CLI is like having to manually connect wires to start your car instead of using the car key. Yeah, knowing some car mechanics may be an advantages but it's pretty useless if you're most likely will never use it because there are alternative and easier way to achieve the same goal.
And you're saying the %APPDATA% is mysterious? Go ask any first-time Ubuntu user about what "sudo apt-get install" is. In fact I can say Windows and Linux are quite even in having cryptic commands like that but one thing clear is Windows has long departed from having too much dependency on CLI. And I'd like to stress here too if it's about user interface, it is Linux that makes me feel like living in the 80's because it emphasize to much on CLI usage and even worse, it feels like as if it tries to convince people that pointing devices (mouse) are pointless (pun intended).

I think this would cause unfair advantage. Windows would be several steps to click through, Debian would be one step:
aptitude install flashplugin-nonfree
The one step configuring flash and drawing in any missing dependencies. As a result, to provide some amount of comparable balance, you need to compare both cli manual and click through gui has to be compared.

This is not a slam on her. She is as far from techie as a girl could get. My wife's windows PC recently crashed due to motherboard issue, so I told her to use my Ubuntu machine so she could facebook, check the news.. etc until i get it fixed.. Since I don't do much browsing with that machine, and it's a new install, it didn't anything installed. My wife was able to easily install it on the fly when she needed to, no help from me at all, and that, my techie friends, is saying something!
Ubuntu, has come a long way. My 9 year old preferes the Ubuntu machine to his windows machine!!

Why didn't he go through the steps to play a game like say, bioshock. Or go through the steps to setup up your OS as a PVR and record television shows. Or set up a test to determine what starts when the OS boots. How about a test applying maintenance. Where's the test for setting up a firewall (much more complex in Linux). This article is a freaking joke. Whoever let this moron print it is more of a moron than the author.....
But real one, and include things like shopping for a card, installing drivers, etc.
And you know the manual for the card will be for Windows, so in Nix, you gotta go fin da manual.
I'd like to see a step by step.
And you know the manual for the card will be for Windows, so in Nix, you gotta go fin da manual.
I'd like to see a step by step.
You don't need a manual
1) Install TV Tuner card (internal or external USB)
2) Put CD in tray and allow drivers to install automatically for the tv tuner card
3) Go into media center, start the PVR wizard
4) Select from a drop down the TV card the media center has found - click next
5) Supply your zipcode for guide data (which automatically from this time forward will download tv listings automatically for you)
6) Supply the device from the drop down for an IR blaster - if you need one to change channels on a cable box
7) record, watch, burn to DVD any TV show offered by your cable company.
There's the 6 step manual on how to do it with windows 7 or any version of windows with media center. all versions of windows 7 have media center. step 7 isn't really a step - it's just using what you have set up.
Now, please give me step by step instructions on how to do it with Linux including A LIST OF SUPPORTED TV TUNERS. Windows will use any TV tuner, LINUX WILL NOT. YOU HAVE TO PURCHASE WHAT LINUX WANTS. So that would be the first step in building a Linux PVR - research what TV tuners Linux or myth TV or whatever will work with the OS. Now that I've given you the first step, please list the steps needed for Linux (including setting up an IR blaster because most people have set top boxes...
I will wait for your instructions....
1) Research on the internet what TV tuners on the market will work with the linux software you intend to use as your PVR. List some of those products here for us so "newbies" know what they need to buy.
2. It's all yours from here, Sinister....

Provided the TV Tuner vendor has produced drivers for Windows.
Hm.. plug in Haupauge USB dongle, open TV app; done. (Bobgroz, if you where open to new and relevant information, I'd actually draft the steps and give you a list of well supported tuners; but, you've made it clear that no new information will be acceptable in contrast to your prejudged opinion.)

I laid out my steps, now I'd like to see yours. That's all. What is XBMC Live?
XBMC Live is a boot-CD with XBMC Media Center pre-configued to work directly out-of-the-box without touching the users harddrive for demo purposes. Once booted, XBMC Live will give the user the option to either just run it as a demo from only the CD (not touching your harddrive) or do a permanent installation of XBMC Live complete with embedded operating-system onto a 2GB (or larger) USB-flash-memory-stick or your internal harddrive for a dedicated set-top-box style installation of XBMC, currently with Microsoft's Windows MCE (Media Center Edition) Remote with USB IR-receiver receiver dongle as the default supported controller which is supported directly out-of-the-box.
When installed onto a USB flash drive or hard disk drive XBMC Live has the ability to save settings and make updates to XBMC Media Center and the operating-system back onto the USB flash drive or hard disk drive that it is installed onto, this is not possible when running XBMC Live from a Live CD booting from a CD-ROM disc as they are read-only and any changes settings are only temporarily saved until the system is rebooted.

Mythbuntu is a community supported add-on for Ubuntu focused upon setting up a standalone MythTV based PVR system. It can be used to prepare a standalone system or for integration with an existing MythTV network. Unlike similar projects, Mythbuntu keeps close ties with Ubuntu and all development is given back to Ubuntu. This architecture allows simple conversions from a standard desktop to a Mythbuntu machine and vice versa. The development cycle of Mythbuntu closely follows that of Ubuntu, releasing every six months along side Ubuntu releases.

Not really fare since this is a full install dedicated to multimedia so you'd have to compare it's actual steps with the actual steps of taking Win7 from bare metal install to TV tuner goodness; maybe the MS based media center from bare metal to watching TV.

When challenged to list the steps to do something in linux that you do not understand HOW to do, or not being able to answer questions posted that any technical "guru" should know, and you don't, you post childish crap like this that does nothing for the technical community.
I bet you studied years in college to come up with that response......
I bet you studied years in college to come up with that response......
Smart you may be. Educated, even. But I've learned that when Linux is the subject, you are not only less than rational, you act like a 13-year-old with an attitude.
There's nothing more pathetic than somebody who refuses to learn something new.
There's nothing more pathetic than somebody who refuses to learn something new.
As bold as it sounds, this "13 year old" forgot more about Linux than you will ever know. I worked with mainframe (mvs, os/390 and z/os) operating systems along with unix/linux for TWENTY YEARS. I was voted in the top 5% of systems programmers by a group of my peers on those systems. I've installed and configured more operating systems - much more complex than the little toy linux - than you ever could. I supported an operating system that had at least 70,000 users on at a time with well over 1000 printers going 24/7.
I set up the three "big iron" operating systems in a sysplex. If a critical unit of work was on a system that was getting sick, it would dynamically get switched to run on one of the other two healthy systems.
I developed a way to run the "big iron" operating system on a PC for troubleshooting, development, and disaster recovery. I received a $30,000 bonus for that task (I worked on it many hours after my workday).
I was DESTROYED back in 2002 by two inept doctors (Dr. Michael Pontari of Temple University, Philadelphia, Pa. and Dr. Desi of Allentown, Pa.) The both were responsible for giving me two medications together (cipro - a powerful quinolone antibiotic that kills anthrax and vioxx - a powerful NSAID that was taken off the market because it killed more americans than died in vietnam.)
You are NEVER supposed to prescribe a quinolone antibiotic and an NSAID. The documentation stating this had been out since the late 80s, yet these two "clowns" decided to give me the drugs together.
At the time, I didn't know any better, to me I was taking an antibiotic and something non-narcotic for my intense prostatitis pain.
The result: PERMANENT BRAIN DAMAGE. I have severe, permanent damage to my frontal lobes and right temporal lobes of the brain. I suffer everyday from seizures, severe anxiety, panic, deep, deep depression, intense insomnia, there are many days I just put my head in my hands and sob.
I lost that 20 year career because of those doctors and a corrupt FDA that puts money before people. You may not know this, but we are, per capita the most expensive nation in the world when it comes to healthcare. We are also DEAD LAST in quality of healthcare among ALL the industrialized nations of the world. The Netherlands have the highest quality of healthcare.
I lost a 12 year marriage. I lost my entire 401k and 100,000 dollars I had saved on my own to pay cash for a home for my wife and daughter. In the last 9 years I have lost 3.5 million dollars in wages and bonuses.
Instead of working in the tech world I love and went to college for (2 degrees, 1 in business admin. and the other in computer science), I sit in my mom's finished basement where my daughter and I live sicker than you could ever imagine.
A crooked lawyer, - Sheller of Sheller in Philadelphia, robbed me of my legal right to sue for damages 9 years ago. Basically, he carried me along until there were 2 months left on my statute of limitations and then dropped me for a ridiculous, unrelated reason.
I run a website for victims of quinolone toxicity, www.fqvictims.org. I have a toll free number which I man, alone, to help "newbies" who have had their lives ruined as well. Through that help line and emails I get from the site, I discovered at least another 20 people who have been defrauded by Sheller. Once couple, lost their 23 year old daughter (she died because of taking Avelox, another drug in the quinolone class). They did the same thing with these grieving parents.... drug them along and then dropped them short of the statute of limitations.
Sheller is taking cash from the drug companies to do this. I believe if I was given the chance I could prove it.
But putting that all aside, the personal pain and losses in my life have exceeded what only the very worst in life receive.
But there was a day when I was at the top. In fact, my mainframe to PC idea for disaster recover attracted a lot of big players (Met Life, Chemical Bank, New York Life, Prudential). I would probably have my own business now, working for myself. Some talented co-workers I hand picked for their knowledge of business and tech were about to leave the fortune 500 company I had worked for 20 years to train, and maintain other mainframe sites around the country - putting their big iron operating systems on the PC for disaster recovery. A typical company would have saved closed to one million per quarter on DR costs.
My company is still using my work today, almost 10 years since I was terminated because I could not return to work (they had no choice, somebody had to do my job).
So think twice, no think 100 times before calling someone something when you know nothing about them. You could come up looking like an ass....
Print the main page of www.fqvictims.org off, and keep it handy if you ever go to the doctor with any infection. Don't EVER take any of the drugs listed there. I may have just saved YOUR life.

How many OS you have dual booting current versions on your machine there? What are the latest BSD and Linux based distributions you've worked with on a regular basis?
So think twice, no think 100 times before calling someone something when you know nothing about them. You could come up looking like an ass....
Your own words right back at you.
I did not call you anything, but referred to behavior demonstrated in your posts. On the subject of Linux on the desktop, you display the maturity of, as I said, a 13-year-old, and, as I also said, no willingness to discuss or learn. If you think this is name-calling, I suggest you pull your linux head out of your windows ass. Or no longer frequent these forums.
I really don't give a sh|t about your medical problems. If they are what cause you to act the way you do on line, so be it. But I'd put up a case of beer that you were universally considered an obnoxious and offensive git before it happened.

You have no idea who I am, and everything you said about me was lies. Actually, my friend, I am dying. Now you have made it clear you don't give a ****. But a lot of people who love me do. And I DO have a lot of people who love me.
You are totally obnoxious. Off the wall obnoxious. Why don't you drink that case of beer, maybe if we're all lucky you'll stop breathing and you can join me in the grave.
A**hole

Nick,
When you said you didn't care how sick I was, you were not only hurting me... but the thousands of really good people I've met in the last 9 years of this fatal sickness - in my mind I thought of all of them and your remark infuriated me.
Maybe you don't care how sick I am or all of us are, but I can assure you, I'm not the monster you painted me out to be in your post.
I have to face God very soon. I should not have made that remark about you dying over a case of beer and I am sorry for saying it.
Think of me what you want. It doesn't matter. I know the truth and have so many here with me to make this transition out of this life.
I'm sorry for even thinking I wished you were dead. I have felt bad ever since I posted it.
Enjoy life while you can, because, believe me - death can creep up on anyone at a time in their life when they very least expect it.
I'm 51 years old and have had this degenerative condition due to a prescribing error for 9 years. It's worse than cancer. It's a slow, torturous death. I hope you can understand how someone in my shoes can get upset when someone says "they don't give a damned how sick I am".
That's your choice not to give a damned about me, my sickness or my death. In fact, you can say you don't give a damned about the thousands of people that are in my shoes on my website. Many of them are VERY close to me.
You see, dying people tend to get very close to one another as they battle their fatal conditions.
Maybe if you read Kristien Petijohn's story on my website, www.fqvictims.org , you can get a better understanding into the living hell we all have to live with.... and die with.
But I can't wish that on another human being, that is hypocrisy, and I wish I could take the words back.
Again, I'm sorry. I don't wish you would die. It's a horrible thing....

I'm not a hateful person, but I allowed myself to be intentionally hateful. I do sympathize with your medical problems, as I do with all who are faced with such. I'm lucky enough to be in excellent health for my age and wish nothing but the same for everybody else.
Edit: -enter-ed too soon...too soon

I actually read it from the perspective of nationality/age/health not relevant in relation to tech skills. More of a "care how you hack not how you look" interpretation.
You can only find ways to attack the person's character and deride anything that is different from your preconceived opinion. When you are provided with information, it's never good enough in your opinion and simply disregarded as "linux head" noise. Interesting that you think that is somehow outside the realm of Trolling..
Seriously, you need to take a step back and try looking at these kinds of topics with a less bias and prejudged view.

I have 4 computers here in my "datacenter" I'll give you a rundown.
1) My oldest machine is a pentium 4 3.2 GZ. I have 4 operatin systems on it. Windows xp home edition, windows vista home edition, windows 7 home edition, and Fedora 13 (just upgraded to that).
On the fedora partition (which is on the second hard drive) I run a full fledged OS/390 using Hercules open source (you can google hercules mvs or hercules z/os or hercules os/390 for details on that). I run OS/390 2.10 on the Fedora partition. OS/390 2.10 contains a full posix compliant UNIX, which I use to set up my webserver - IBM''s websphere along with some 3rd party database utilities.
My next machine would be my Mac Mini. I have that setup with bootcamp to run Windows 7 Home edition or the Mac osx 10.6.something. I also have OS/390 2.10 installed in the unix terminal program on the mac. The os/390 software came from where I worked and is worth a ton of money. So I have it redundantly on my machines. Again, I have the full posix compliant unix that runs as a started task in os/390 2.10 and have the basically the same setup with some minor differences (I have a different website running on websphere).
Next up is a Falcon Mach V which I dual boot Windows XP home edition and Windows Vista Basic. On the Windows XP system, I have a virtual machine running a 2008 version of Mandriva Linux and also a virtual machine running another copy of windows xp home (this is what my daughter uses - I only let her on the virtual machine as I don't want her damaging anything on the REAL windows XP). Again, on that virtual copy of Mandriva Linux, I have - you guessed it - OS/390 2.10. This copy of OS/390 2.10 is basically a clone of the copy I have on the Mac Mini. I use Vmware Workstation to manage my virtual machines on this system.
Finally, my top end machine is another Falcon Mach V with an intel hexacore processor the i7 980x. I also have the latest copy of vmware workstation installed on this machine, as it is a screamer. This is my gaming rig, it also has two nvidia gtx 480's and 12 mb of RAM. I have (at the moment) two virtual machines running on my top end Mach V. I have a copy of windows xp home edition that runs those games that refuse to work on windows 7 (the latest copy of vmware workstation provides full directx 9.0C support and gorgeous 3d. The other virtual machine I'm running on this screamer is Mandriva Linux 2010 spring edition. Of course I have os/390 2.10 installed on the Mandriva 2010 spring edition virtual machine, because I get upwards of 100 MIPS when IPLing and running OS/390 on the core I7 980x. Just a note here, when I began working on mainframes in 1982, the first machine I worked on was an IBM 3033. It was the size of a house (literally) and had tons of water cooling under the floor. THAT machine only put up around 50-60 MIPS! So in effect, I'm running OS/390 2.10 (or MVS base) at almost twice the speed it was run in 1982 on a machine the size of a house, but now am running it in a virtual Mandriva Linux machine at twice those mips.
On that copy of os/390 2.10, I have the works installed, omegamon, xpediter, full language support for COBOL, BAL (basic assembler language), REXX, Fortran, Clists, an excellent JES2 viewer/manipulator called IOF and also have it running as a full MONOPLEX. The reason I can run all this stuff is due to the speed of the processor.
I plan on putting the latest Ubuntu on the newest falcon, just to see what all the clamor is about. I'm not expecting a whole lot from it, though, it's just another Linux Distro.
Yes, 4 copies of OS/390 and they can intercommunicate behind my linksys router. In addition, I can port forward any of the operating systems, in case you are interested, I will let you log on to OS/390 and see what a REAL operating system is. I will set up a userid and password for you and give you a domain name if you want to log on and look around - you will be stunned and totally humbled.
That's a summary of what I am running now. I probably use windows the most (as I love computer gaming) and have all the latest games (bioshock, far cry 2, crysis, bioshock 2, oblivion, Mass effect 1 and 2, the whole half life series, etc).
Next to that I am on the OS/390 machines a lot. I love that operating system, it is much more powerful than any other operating system in the world - and there is a quote, I can't give the author's name, but I remember he was VERY influential in computers during the last 40 years - his quote was "Western civilization runs on MVS". Os/390 and subsequent Z/os are just MVS operating systems at their heart with Unix tacked on for running web servers, ftp servers, telnet, etc.
That quote I gave you is absolutely true. Every large bank, insurance company, wall street , disney world, the military, any LARGE business MUST run MVS (or now Z/OS) as it's called. They could NEVER run the huge workloads or databases on Linux, there just isn't enough power or security there. The whole y2k conversion was done primarily on the MVS platform with the legacy languages that run this country.
COBOL is a word most people don't know anymore, but believe me, ALL LARGE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS run their bread and butter applications on the COBOL language.
Again the offer still stands. I will forward a port for you to log on the OS/390 system if you like (if you are really technical, I don't know how you could refuse such a generous offer), just to see what a real operating system is like.
MVS has been in development for close to 60 years and every operating system in the world uses the basic principles first developed by IBM on MVS.
For example, virtual storage. MVS INVENTED virtual storage. The MVS operating system developed "page datasets" where work was swapped in and out giving an illusion of 2GB of addressable memory. But it was all virtual.
Swap files, or swap partitions are just copied concepts first developed by IBM in the 1950's when MVS began its long reign as THE OS that runs the world.
In large businesses all the heavy lifting is done by the MVS based OS, with linux and windows machines (servers) strung off of it - to provide modern day GUI applications that serve as front ends to the real backbone where the computing is done - MVS (or OS/390 or Z/OS) they can all be referenced interchangeably. An older mainframe programmer would just call it MVS, even though IBM has changed the name when they provided first 32 bit Unix support and now 64 bit Unix support.
If you want to check out my machine we will need to exchange emails so I can give you instructions on how to get to the machine, and also, phone numbers because I believe you are going to need pretty much instruction on how to log on, look around, etc. - and there is so much to know email just wouldn't cut it.
I get a thrill showing it off, so it would be a pleasure for me
I am very friendly, although very sick as well. I believe some things that people who focus on Linux would greatly disagree with me, but I know it's because that's their "baby" - Linux - that's where they have invested their time in learning an OS, and frankly for the average person, Linux is about as complex as you can get (download, install, etc.). Nobody is going to download a copy of MVS, no way. I only have it because I developed a way utilizing the open software HERCULES to run it on a PC.
But I believe I have a much "clearer" view of what OS belongs where - and where it's strengths could be leveraged to the greatest advantage.
I get some of the linux people angry when I insist that windows 7 is the best OS for the average HOME user. It really is. It's easy to use, and most people are familiar with the way windows does things because it's been around for home use for many years. It has the best hardware support (all vendors write windows drivers) and installing software is a pretty simple thing to do. You really don't have to know much to get a piece of - say - photography software or a modern triple a title 3d game running on windows 7. If you are a home user who really doesn't give a damned about the tech under the OS, and just want to quickly get up and running with minimal hassles, windows 7 or OSX (for those who like apple) are the best solutions.
Linux has it's place. It's good for midsize businesses to run their software, and it's a great tech toy for those who want to go deeper into the bowels of an OS than could be done on windows 7 or OSX. But people like that are NOT in the majority, I believe we both know that, Neon. That's why Linux has such a small market share among home computer users. They don't have the stomach for tech, they just want internet access, easy app installs, and support for any hardware they buy.
Getting back to MVS.....
I spent MONTHS migrating it from a real IBM mainframe to the hercules emulator. Many failures before I finally got it all up and running - it was HARD work, believe me.
So, if you are not the paranoid type, Neon, I'd be glad to show you a world of computing you have never seen - that I think would blow you away. In fact, once I set it up, and show you how to basically move around on it, if you send me an email with a request to bring it up for you - I'd be glad to do it.
Let me know, OK?
That's a summary of what I run here in my home datacenter.....

Really all I did with MVS was install the supplied turnkey system that you can download at the HERCULES (search hercules mvs or hercules 390 or hercules z/os) to find it.
here, www.hercules-390.org . You have access to download the same turnkey system I downloaded and installed. See if you can install it (I suggest doing it under Linux). If you can't, I understand, it took me at least 5 of my 20 years to understand it enough to install it - but maybe you're really sharp
.
Look we can do this one of two ways - you can log on to my turnkey system that I downloaded and installed from the site, OR I can teach you how to install the turnkey system ON YOUR MACHINE. I really don't mind spending the time to do either with you. I love tech, and I'm sure you do to. Believe me, when you see MVS 3.8 in action you will be amazed.
Just post a thread showing interest and I'll pass along my email. Contact me and we'll go from there...
You would get an EXCELLENT background and have a KILLER OS at the same time on your system. Your friends would be amazed.
It's all in the doc on the site how to do it, but without MVS experience I think it could be a bit too rough. It will also open up some Linux stuff you never knew existed.
So... my offer stands. Post if you are interested.

.. and you have a heck of a setup there to hack about with. mainframe OS nodes behind a home router; this is way beyond religious wards between two different mini server and desktop setups. I wouldn't compare Linux to big iron OS like zOS either personally. I think some of the distributions based on it are fantastic in given situations but sometimes there is a better OS to choose. Cheers for laying out the technical details. This is far more informative than than capitalizing claims with no technical detail to back them up. Most including Cobal and the Hercules OSS project I was familiar with but haven't played with directly. I'll be going back to read the setup on detail as I skimmed it pretty quick just now.
I'd only suggest leaving out the all-caps and appearance of rage directed at tech people who are convinced by details much more than speaking/typing louder. It's hard to put much consideration into a claim that XYZ platform can't do ABC function when one is reading the comment on XYZ doign ABC. That's not meant as an attack, just an observation based on much of your past posting.
In terms of your health, I am empathetic and normally stay out of discussion as a result. If you haven't, please contact ISMP US about the case and if you've a network of other's with similar experience, have them also contact ISMP US. Given enough case history to base a report and investigation on, they can reach most of the pharmaceutical and medial industries. My friend mentioned that they had emailed you back but are not able to pursue it since you are within the ISMP US region of responsibility. They where interested though based on the potential for harm from something widely used by doctors.

They where interested though based on the potential for harm from something widely used by doctors.
.. something foreign to what I've got here already.. oh I'm all over that.. heading for the .org right now actually.
Sorry if an extra post came out, I accidentally hit the enter key before I had a chance to type this. I have parkinson's like shaking and sometimes my hands to some weird things.
Also, about the upper case, noted. You see, I suffer from a lot of anxiety, agitation, tons of insomnia, rage, and other mental conditions brought on by the brain damage. The emotional parts of my brain are damaged, not the intellect.
In some ways I wish it was the other way around, that I would become completely retarded, not knowing what is going on around me, but not suffering all the intense anxiety and agitation. I had none of this before I took Cipro and Vioxx together 9 years ago.
I've already been writing a post and gone into a seizure! So I get a little excited (a lot excited) if I perceive (usually incorrectly) someone is questioning my technical skills because I have made a statement about an issue.
I find most resistance comes from my belief that windows 7 or the Mac OSX are the best choices for people who don't care about tech - the best OS's for the home. I'm not talking to people who want to understand more about how a computer works, you know, converting hex to binary, things like that. When I make those statements I'm referring to Mr. and Mrs. America who really have no interest in computers, but need the services they supply.
It's like someone who uses their car but doesn't know a thing about an engine. It's those people (and they compromise the majority of home computer users) who I feel windows 7 or OSX are best for. Sometimes people misunderstand my point of view and say things a bit derogatory about that view, and sometimes my technical abilities are questioned or mocked.
The old Bob wouldn't care, and wouldn't even reply. But the brain injured Bob has a very hard time controlling himself when he knows that he is very advanced in tech, and his statement is true. It's usually someone who lives, sleeps and eats linux, has a hatred for Microsoft or Apple, and has an axe to grind. You get a reply like "What do you mean windows 7 is best for the home user -what do you know about tech, you probably never even installed a linux distribution"
It's stuff like that I have to work really hard at controlling myself. Those are the things that usually cascade into a very brain damaged emotional explosion in my mind.
I think from now on, when someone posts a response like that, I'm just going to ignore it.
But enough of that. I just wanted to offer you something, Neon. On my website, www.fqvictims.org - on the "contact us" tab - there is a toll free number. That number rings my house (my vonage phone). It's a way to reach me without me having to give personal, public information.
I want to say, I have things that I did not list in my post about what I've installed, etc. - things I can't list publicly for legal reasons - that would blow you away.
If you are interested, and I get to know you, I would even be willing to set up an FTP server and let you have some of this stuff. It runs under Hercules, and I don't want to disclose what it is in public, because I don't want some legal beagle knocking at my door.
If I don't answer the phone, don't worry, just leave a call back, and I will call you back.
If you don't live in the U.S., don't worry, I have a vonage plan with free long distance to any place in the world.
I think if we talked, you would be very interested in some of the things I have here.
You mentioned VM, I never had a chance to play with that, and I know it runs under Hercules. If you have VM I'd be interested in setting it up under Hercules to see what it is like. I love tech, and operating systems especially.
So... if you are interested in some super cool stuff that I just can't post in this forum publicly, just call my toll free help line. The best time to reach me is after 9:30 PM EDT (New York Time Zone). I don't know how that spells out to where you live. I suspect you are from England, but can't know for sure. I've talked to many English people who have been destroyed by the quinolones. Some of them are my best friends.
Anyway, there's the offer, you can take it if you wish. I'll even help you through the rough spots with hercules. Don't feel bad if there are some things there you don't get, like I said I worked months on it after work at night, when I was working some 9 years ago.
And I will watch my caps
Take care, NEON.....

I initially questioned when the download listed a tarball and .rpms only but did a quick package search and found the Debian native Hercules before even getting further down no the .org page and spotting the "for debian; apt-get install..." bit.
The one bit I expect to have grief with is the use of Tun devices to bridge the networking. After my last go at Tun and bridging, I was happy to see an updated virtualbox with bridging now as a simply config selection.
Now I'm waiting for enough time to go through the mvs related links at the bottom and track down that drop-in image.

Neon, here is the link to grabbing the MVS 3.8 volumes:
http://www.hercules-390.org/hercfaq.html#2.05
Go down to section 2.05 on that page.
As I said, I have a lot of stuff here not on those volumes that I cannot discuss publicly.
The toll free number that would ring me at www.fqvcitms.org is 1-866-360-4639. I don't have a problem posting it, because it's public on that site, anyway. It's the number the "newbies" to quinolone toxicity call for help.
Feel free to call anytime. The best time to reach me is after 9:30 PM New York Time (EDT). I don't know where you live, so you would have to calculate what time that is for you. I am in bed most of the day. Trying to get sleep. I am up all night from 9:30 until 4 AM in the morning.
I can't sleep at night because I get terror and dread from the dark, believe it or not. I really have some serious brain issues.
I'm not a nut, though, and people who have talked to me on the phone say "you don't even sound like you're sick".
I try real hard to push back the pain. I would be delighted to show you some of the things I have here that I can't mention on a public board. I'm even willing to help you over those difficult humps in the hercules config.
You are right about the tun/tap interface. Just make sure you turn ip-forwarding on and set up a proxy_arp and away you go with tun/tap. Hercules does the rest. It opens the devices and when you start hercules, before even IPLing the operating system, you can see the tun/tap information in an "ifconfig" list. That's the way you know if you have it set up right - you should see it in ifconfig. If it doesn't show up there, something is wrong.
Anyway, I'll leave it to you to call if you want. I can promise you some really cool tech. And, as I said, if we can make a solid verbal agreement I would be willing to set up an ftp server for you to download it and see some amazing things.
Sorry if I get excited about it, but it really is that cool. Unbelievable would be a better word. I demo'd my setup for Prudential in NYC and they wanted to become my very first customer. It was right after that demo, the meds broke through the blood/brain barrier in my brain and acid was poured all over my brain. Damned doctors. You'd think after all that training in medical school, they would know how to prescribe medications properly.
That's my issue, though, and I won't go any further with it.

Due to a broken Nvidia 9800 GX2 which I replaced with an ATI 5970, I am getting a brand new - through and RMA with Falcon Nvidia GTX 295.
This is a very powerful video card. It is two Nvidia GTX 200 series cards put together on one card. It's SLI on one card.
I'm going to list it on ebay at a starting bid of $300. Just go over to ebay and see how much these things are going for and you will see that 300 bucks is a BARGAIN for this card.
If anyone is interested, I would be willing to part with it for $300 here. It is brand new, factory sealed, with a lifetime warranty.
The card is a SCREAMER. You will need at least a 600 watt power supply for the card. You can go to Nvidia.com and check out the card and the specs on it.
If anyone here wants it for 300 bucks, I'll let it go. It's going up on ebay when it arrives on 9/2. I know I'll get at least 400 bucks there for it, but it's hassles to list it, etc.
Anyone interested please email me at bobby.falcon@hotmail.com
If you are into gaming, this card will not disappoint. I'm not going to start selling stuff on this website, it's just that this came along, and well, I'm willing to let it go here for $300 + shipping. It's brand new, and would be a fine component for any computer with a decent CPU.
I'll let this off ebay until 9/02 (that's when it's expected to arrive at my door), after that I have to list it on Ebay.

Because it is based (or was when I last read about it) of off a SLI'd 260. If the game could make use of duel GPU's, it would work great, but many games, especially console ports, do not support duels. Because its doing the SLI itself through a single bus, rather than using 2 bus's, It's up to the drivers to account for this problem.
So the final result was, under some game, awesome performance, under others, pitiful gtx260 performance, and in others, horrid compatibility issues (Threading graphics is my guess, I haven't really seen anything to explain why it has compatibility issues).
Apparently ATI Duel GPU cards have similar issues (Again, according to that article), and nVidia was originally congratulated for the GTX280 (and later 285) for sticking with a powerful single GPU system for maximum performance and compatibility.
Of course this is no longer the case. But I'd rather have a 285 in my system, works with more OS's and works better with more games.

My XFX ATI 5970 is a dual GPU card (2x5870). The 5870's used together in the 5970 are clocked down a bit to deal with heat issues.
Every game I've thrown at it, Far Cry2, Bioshock, Bioshock2, Cyrsis, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3 (with all DLC), Timeshift, Quake 4, Doom 3, Unreal Tournament 3, Left for Dead, Left for Dead 2, Wolfenstein, FEAR, Alone in the Dark, Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2, Tomb Raider Legend, Beyond Good and Evil, Serious Sam 2, Crysis Warhead, Halo, Halo2, Assassin's Creed 1 & 2, Advent Rising, Metro 2033, Deep Space, Stalker (and all ad on packs), Dark Messiah Might and Magic, Thief Deadly Shadows, Tribes, Devastation, Dungeon Siege, All the Quake Series including the original quake with 3d patches, Guns, Star Trek Elite force 1&2, Dark Sector, Just cause 1&2, The Chronicles of Riddick,
Call of Juarez, Singularity, Half Life Series (all games),
Titan Quest + Titan Quest Immoral Throne, Trine, Portal, Painkiller Series, Prey, FEAR 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Lost Planet Extreme Condition, Sacred, Sacred 2, Infernal,
The longest Journey, Shadow Grounds, SIN, SIN Episodes Emergence have ALL run perfectly fine on my ATI 5790 which is a dual card in crossfire mode all on one card.
It has rave reviews and Maximum P.C. rates my 5790 the best high end card.
Now I know I'm not selling my 5790, but the point is it IS TWO CARDS IN ONE utilizing crossfire mode.
I would appreciate a link to this article you read. I've never heard anything like this before. Please provide the facts.
As I said, tomorrow it goes on Ebay and I know I will get at least 400 bucks for it.
Anyone who wants a great video card with no problems for $300 sealed and brand new with a lifetime warranty, I'm willing to sell here + shipping costs.
You can believe the post about 2 card in 1 solutions, but I would ask the poster for facts, not "I remember reading somewhere...."
I'm a big time gamer as testified by my partial collection I have listed in this post, and I've NEVER heard of ANY problems with two in one GPU solutions with either Nvidia or ATI.
In fact, I'm so sure this card will make the buyer happy, I will refund the cost + shipping if you are not happy with it. I'm offering the same on Ebay, but if you go to buy it there it's going to cost a lot more.
Perhaps the poster reporting problems with dual GPU cards was referring to problems with Linux. That I would believe, Linux has always had trouble with high end video cards and triple A titles, This card was meant for Windows.
I'm sure it would do all your 2D stuff and some minor 3D stuff in Linux, some of the older titles using Cedega or Wine, but I wouldn't expect triple A title games to work in any solution under Linux.
As far as the poster's claim that games "ported from consoles" have problems, I play many console ports on my 5790 and have never had a shutdown, hang, BSOD - not once in the time I have had it. I've worked it HARD, and it runs everything I throw at it fine.
I can't attest to the GTX 295 I'm selling, but the poster implied all dual GPU cards had problems in "some article he remembered reading....."
Again, for all of us here who are considering purchasing either the card I'm selling or any dual GPU card - for their sake post your source. You could be steering people away from crossfire and SLI which are not supported on their motherboard with two single cards, but will work with the dual GPU card solutions.
The card I'm selling is for gamers only. It's hot, and has rave reviews (you can search on the reviews online)
Here is a link to a magazine I respect very much when it comes to high tech concerning the card I am selling:
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/nvidia_geforce_gtx_295
Alternately, you can go to maximumpc.com and just search for gtx 295.
The price there is quoted as 500 bucks (I really think I will land close to that on ebay).
The offer stands. You can either read my link or search on google for the glowing reviews on the gtx 295 or you can trust someone who "remembers somewhere he read an article dual GPU cards have problems...."
As for me, I only trust facts. Reviews online and google searches. I am confident that my link or any google search hit will spell out that the GTX 295 is a screamer and for 300 bucks is a great deal.
Again, email me at bobby.falcon@hotmail.com if you are interested. I'm doing this as a favor to those who love Tech Republic as I do.....

There are folks that play games but it's just an amusement. There are gamers that research hardware and play games as a primary recreation including frame rate counters that tweek the hardware out. Sinister strikes me as beyond that and into "power user" range; someone who literally has one or two games minimized while running a movie out one display and playing a third game on the other. I'd make the suggestion of asking for a link and reading the article that Sinister is referring to based on my interpreting the post as conversational rather than confrontational.
Now, I'll go back to my humble gtx260. It may suck compared to tripled sli madness but I only have to push a single header 1280x1024.

I dont recall, did you say which manufacture made that 295?
I have had some horrid luck with nVidia cards being shipped damaged. Read reviews on newegg to see similar complaints.
As for the article, it was like a toms hardware or something like that, showing benchmark tests between the cards. Often the 295 was only barely over the 280 and sometimes under it. I haven't read, but I am guessing then that the 285 might rate higher than the 295 in many tests now.

Don't forget it, it will probably last 10 years or more without issues, and will be more than powerful enough for another 5 years. Power consumption and price makes it a very good card. Nothing to be embarrassed about.
As I said in my subject line, this is a brand new EVGA GTX 295. I'm getting this from Falcon, not newegg. I've never had a bad part or component shipped to me by Falcon. Their packaging is out of this world. The card comes with a lifetime warranty. Did you read the review I posted on it? I have to check my email to see if anyone here wants the card (I won't give the name of the buyer, just that it sold here, if it did).
Otherwise, I will certainly post the sell price and even the item number so you can watch how it goes for me.
I just saw one sold for $499. Somebody went a little nuts paying that much for a gtx 295, it's a second generation card.
Now I will never sell my gtx 480's
Those things in sli ROCK. Physx, CUDA, OpenCL, stereoscopic 3d, and frame rates that blow every game away that I throw at them.
I'm sure the water cooled Core I7 980x helps the situation as well.
My rating index is 7.8 in windows 64bit. The highest rating possible is 7.9.
When I start shooting pictures of the card with my sony cybershot camera, I'll click a few of my datacenter and put them up to see. It's pretty impressive.
My whole life was tech. Ever since I got that degree in computer science I was hooked. Computers have always fascinated me.
They are a great diversion for the pain I live with every day.
I also want you all to know I appreciate all of you guys - it's like standing around in some computer shop talking tech with your buddies.
Thanks!
Otherwise, I will certainly post the sell price and even the item number so you can watch how it goes for me.
I just saw one sold for $499. Somebody went a little nuts paying that much for a gtx 295, it's a second generation card.
Now I will never sell my gtx 480's

No longer be double wide?
SLI 480s would be epic, what do you have, a 2000 watt PSU? lol

Sorry if you already said it was a 480, I have a lousy memory. EVGA is a pretty good manufacturer. Never heard of Falcon though. Got a website?

The gtx 260 is no slouch. If you're running games at 1280 x 1024 on one monitor, that's a fine card. You don't really need a whole lot more power than that.
I've always been in this cycle where I upgrade my computer every 3-5 years. I used to build them myself, but now I have parkinson's like shaking - I can't even slot a video card.
So, I always buy from my most trusted system builder - Falcon Northwest. Those guys are great to work with and take care of their customers.
If you don't know how to build an exotic water cooled system - let them do the job. I priced what it would cost me to build my machine and what I paid them. I actually came out cheaper with them building it, rather than me purchasing all the parts individually.
They get whopper volume discounts and that gets passed on to the buyer.
Although, I will say, I still wish I could build my own rig.
That was a big part of the fun of the whole thing. Deciding on parts, making sure they were all compatible, then getting on the workbench and putting it all together.
Pressing that power button for the first time was always a huge rush - did I make a mistake, a bios setting, perhaps, or was the memory slotted incorrectly? Nothing beat the ecstasy of pushing that button and getting a normal post , right into the OS. It was so freaking cool.
But you have to live with what you got, right? I pay people with steady hands to do it for me now. You sure can't risk putting a $1000 CPU down on the mobo with your hands shaking so bad you can't even line it up. I'm not bending any pins on my 980x, no way!
I still get into the bios, though, when I get my new systems and tailor them for the hottest performance.
The bios is going away, probably you will see that next year - in it's place UEFI. The same UEFI that a mac requires to boot. The bios cannot read a boot drive greater than 2 TB. With 3 TB drives on the horizon, you need UEFI to manage your hardware and boot off that big drive.
Sorry for getting off the beaten path. Neon be PROUD of your gtx 260 and your whole system. After all, it suits your needs and that's all that matters....

In a modern computer most people will be booting off SSD's, I have one (it supports the TRIM command) and it screams.
I don't think we will be seeing 3 TB SSD's for some time...

I really need to get a 64bit windows for my gaming boot now that I've expanded the ram to 8 gig. It's silly how many VMs I have to open under Debian just to get it over the 4 gig mark now (saw it touching my swap partition and figured ddr2 was going to become hard to find soon).
For my needs, the gtx260 is fantastic. I haven't yet maxed out a game beyond it's processing power though things like the next Crysis might send me back to reducing graphics settings. 1280x1024 single header is also pretty small by today's standards but I'm not planning a monitor upgrade any time soon so I benefit from anything I buy now being overpowered for that low a resolution.
Compared to the latest geforce boards the 260 is pretty old but your absolutely right, it fits into my current setup and needs perfectly. (but, if I could afford to drop 500 into a GPU.. mowahahahahaa)

The item number is 320585795759 in case there is interest in buying this brand new gtx 295 video card.
I am posting this as a service to anyone here that may be interested.

I posted my steps on how to set up a PVR in windows days ago, I can't even get a post from any of you self proclaimed tech guru's how to do it in Linux. Could it be that none of you know how? Hnmmmm. Sure looks that way to me.

Gosh, I'm sorry we where all not at your beck and call knowing the steps off the top of our head to draft a one-off set of steps customizes for your personal needs and strict high standards in 12 minutes or under.. it must just be further proof of the great "Linux Head" conspiracy against Bobgroz.
