I think the open development platform of Android is fueling new application development. All the smartphone app developers I know are now developing for the Apple and Android platforms whereas 1 year ago it was Apple only. One of the things people seem to forget is that 80%+ of the cellphones are not smartphones. Open development languages can be used with those devices.
