'Kluge' is the original spelling (from the German), with the Americanized pronunciation of 'kloohj'. 'Kludge' came to the US from the Brits, who took kluge, misspelled it, and gave it back to us.

Either way, it's a [semi-]permanent solution that is neither efficient nor aesthetically appealing, but gets the job done...sort of.
