I have the same experience with a Lithium-ion battery in a power drill. The drill simply stops and the battery recharges normally. My guess is you are right that there is a circuit in the battery pack that shuts it down before it discharges to the point of no return.

The light weight of the drill is a great feature of the Lithium pack.
