Junkware

You have junkmail. Why not junkware. So I just googled it and it is already a farily widely used term with the same meaning as crapware.

JunkWare
malcolm@... 20th Oct 2010
I think I like the term JunkWare. It suggests that if you really want that product, you can put it to use; even if most of the rest of the world doesn't want it.
One man's junk is an metal-sculture artist's treasure.

Sure had to scroll through a lot of irrelevant stuff to get to, and thus avoid duplicating, the obvious solution; e.g., I don't care whether Macs have Junkware or not ... in this context, that's JunkComment.
Because it's a crapware-free Mac. happy
Will never buy that companies products again ware!
If we really want to get rid of this stuff, contact the company that provided it and tell them you are not going to buy their products EVER! And that goes double for the hardware vendor. If we all did that how long do you think it would be before they stop it?

Good point

I have asked about that, and their comeback is then we will have to raise the price of the computer.

Bring it!

It'd be no skin off MY nose... I roll my own whenever possible.

Now, if I could assemble my own laptop from off-the-shelf parts, I could be free of the OEM scourge completely!
I try to ignore crapware systems. They tend to be sold on cheaper systems.

After removing all these crappy screensavers from a low end HP system - each screensaver with its own uni8nstaller - it would be faster to just install Windows from scratch.

A also find the anti-virus companies seem to include their own crapware. Maybe give the user a choice to install than force it on us? Same for Roxio. No choice.

Why is it that HP software requires 400MB of disk space when you install the software for their printers? [And they dump on an IE toolbar without telling us and this webprint stuff as well.

I am more irritated at the printer companies than the computer vendors, just for that reason.

Printers
magic8ball Updated - 19th Oct 2010
I hate it when I just want a printer driver and the installer won't let you install just the dang driver. All I want to do is print.

HP has to be the worst at doing this.

Edited to add my disdain for HP printers

For HP
Bruce Epper 20th Oct 2010
Just do it the easy way. Visit their website and download the driver package for the printer and avoid using the CD that came with the device. I have yet to find a HP printer that does not have a bare driver package that I can download.
Usually you can open the driver installation exe, with something like Winrar, and extract just the driver files you need.
Most HP printers will have a corporate software package available on the HP site that doesn't come with any of the bloat that the CD installs. We install these just about daily for our field users, and all they install are drivers. No updaters, photo editing junk, web helpers, nothing but drivers.
The slim version removes the toolbar. I have used it for a few years now and it has really cut back on the routine maintenance. You have to go to the builds page to download it just the same that you would have to do for the portable version.

I just keep it on my flash drive and can use for any computer I am working on.

For those instances when you really don't want to install it on a workstation. I like the slim version because I can set it to auto run when the user logs in.

I bought a very good computer with one snag. It had an anti-virus program called Bullguard pre-installed. This caused terrible problems especially with the software for a Lexmark 760 multi-function printer. I had to format the HDD and re-install Win 7 Ultimate and all other software, luckily I had all the disks, and then used Norton 360 instead as my AV and Firewall, (I actually like Norton). So a word of warning to all, if you find Bullguard on a PC new out of the box do NOT activate it but remove it and install some other AV/Firewall program instead.
What about: Unaskedfor Programs.

Quicktime, the free version, crops up a message every now and then to buy the enhanced and much better ... paid version. t also came with the google or yahoo toolbar if I remember correctly.
I've been a Quicktime user on Windows since Win 95.

Quicktime, by itself on Windows is shareware.

You have to pay $30 for the pro version (which is worth it, imho, because of the file export options.)

At no point can I recall where Apple ever included an installer for a Google or Yahoo toolbar with Quicktime. Perhaps you are thinking of Java?
Have a look at this program. Seems to do what is asked.

this

"When SlimComputer assesses your PC, it actively streams data to the cloud"

Just what is it looking at and sending to the cloud?
Retaining your own OS disc and formatting your new computer as soon as you get it, then install only what you want?
Seems that was what it was called in much earlier times. Describes it perfectly.

Bloatware makes your PC fat and slow, not to mention heavy. So put it on a diet and rid it of all bloatware

ShovelWare
M@... Updated - 20th Oct 2010
In all the years I have been in IT, I have always called this garbage 'ShovelWare' - particularly when CDs were first included with PC magazines because they felt the need to fill all this available space so just used a 'Shovel' to bung any old garbage they could get for free.
The same applies to new computers with huge hard drives and an end-user with, apparently, no say in the matter.

I'm So Lucky!
Chi-7@... 20th Oct 2010
I've forgotten what the real world is like,
we get a new platform,it is booted from a "live CD" and burned in for 240 hours with batteries of tests. This may seem extreme but in the last 2 years we have weeded out device mortality issues and failed platforms to zero incidents.

Once a platform is verified "compatible & acceptable" C:\ with all of it's misery goes to the bit-bucket in favor of our OS.

Don't waste your time trying to remove the crapware, instead format the hard drive and install a clean Windows 7 OS. If your computer did not come with the installation media but only a recovery disk, use any Windows 7 DVD of the same flavour (Home Premium, Pro, etc.) and the installation key code on the sticker of your new machine.

Every computer I've ever bought for clients, or myself - I've always removed all partitions, formatted, and created new partitions. What crapware problem?
...besides those you mention. The installed version I have does not include unwanted software.
Maybe a few explatives could be added before CRAPWARE,but it is what it is.

Information contained was good, but I dont care what you like or dislike.
New Names? How 'bout cellubyte, diskitis, app-arrhea, influenzapps....
What about 'clutterware'?
How about wasteware? It waste a lot of your time working around it and to get rid of it.
PC DeCrapifier....funny, and appropriate. My kids would love that name, only I will not mention it because I'd never hear the end of it.

You all have a crap-free day!!
Amen to all of the above. In addition, does anyone know how to keep MS from hijacking my computer? Evertime MS udates it r-writes my default settings and installs Bing and other apps that I do not want or need. Is there some way to stop this?
