The EULA was the deal-breaker for me. I am very thankful I read it and went nook.

I use my Kindle everyday. I bought two covers. The main one was the leather, I like this as it protects the Kindle and can take the cover off easily. I bought a soft slip cover, because the leather cover makes it much thicker to carry. When I go to doctor/dentist, etc, I want to carry it in my pocket, the slip on works for this as it is light and slimmer.
To find the many ways to use the Kindle, use the Kindle manual located on the 'Home' key. Open it and use the search to find how to do something, like make folders to organize the books.
One of my favorite things about the Kindle is it can use other formats than you mentioned. Not all books on Amazon are in Kindle format, but you can go to publishers and other sites, download the file, email it to your Kindle email address and the converted file is whisperneted to your Kindle quickly. Amazon charges $0.15 to do this. There are conversion files on the internet that will do this, but I prefer this way.

I second the advice previously given that you should use the username@free.kindle.com address, plus connected via WiFi not 3G. In the email subject also ensure you type in the word "convert" (without quotes). Love the way PDFs and DOCs download to my Kindle in less than a minute in time to take the Kindle in to a meeting and not a lot of rattling papers. Low light or bright light I have no problem reading this screen!
I'm able to pause mp3s fine.
Also, to receive PDFs via email and your maximum amount set to 0.00, make sure you're using the username@free.kindle.com address, plus connected via WiFi. I've also managed to do this without any issues.

By comparing the B&N and Amazon websites, I found that Amazon (overall) had better prices than B&N, sometimes by hugh margins. So when you compare eReaders, make sure that you compare intelligently not on a whim or someone else's opinion.
I would suggest that the cover with light is also a good accessory to have. The Kindle is not back lit and reading when the lights are low in a plane or other public transport is eye straining - I even use the reading light at home on really overcast days when it is a great plus as of course you are not reading the black fonts on a pure white background as you would with a book.
