I use a little freeware utility called "Startup Monitor" (by Mike Lin) that asks one's permission whenever anything tries to put itself in the various start-at-boot areas of Windows. It's great to tame obnoxious programs like Adobe Reader and Quick Time that are constantly trying to foist their own update checks on everyone.
